A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
ESTABLISHING AN EMPLOYEE HEALTHY FOOD AND BEVERAGE
POLICY
WHEREAS, there is proven value in workplace established programs which support the
health and well -being of employees, and organizations which have implemented workplace
healthy food and beverage policies experience improved employee retention and productivity,
reduced absenteeism and overall improved employee satisfaction; and
WHEREAS, developing an employee healthy food and beverage policy which includes
providing healthy alternatives at City of Gilroy- sponsored activities, programs, special events,
celebrations, trainings and meetings is important in improving the health of the city workforce;

WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Gilroy recognizes the importance of
implementing such a program to support the health and quality of life of city employees, which
in turn supports the community in which they serve.
NOW, THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL HEREBY RESOLVES to adopt an
Employee Healthy Food and Beverage Policy, attached hereto as Exhibit "A ".

CITY OF GILROY
HEALTHY FOOD AND BEVERAGE POLICY
INTRODUCTION
There is an increased awareness of the importance of improving access to healthy foods and beverage
options throughout Gilroy. This applies to both the city workforce and the community overall. The
development of a policy which encourages healthy food and beverage alternatives to be made available
at all City of Gilroy- sponsored activities and events, and in City vending machines, allows the City to
lead by example. Organizations that have implemented workplace healthy food and beverage policies
experience improved employee retention and productivity, reduced absenteeism and improved
employee satisfaction, amongst other benefits. The establishment of this City Healthy Food and
Beverage Policy is important to improving the health of the City workforce and the community being
served.
MISSION
The City of Gilroy understands and recognizes the importance of good nutrition and the role it plays in
the maintenance of good health and well - being. The City is committed to creating a supportive
environment for healthy food choices and alternatives.
FOOD OPTIONS
Where food is provided or served by the City of Gilroy, healthy options and access to nutritious food
and beverages shall be offered at all City of Gilroy- sponsored activities, programs, special events,
celebrations, trainings and meetings. Examples of healthy food options include the following:
o Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low -lit dairy products, and lower -fat 'versions of

Examples of healthy beverages include the following:

• Water, non - flavored milk (non -fat or low -fat), , plant derived milk (rice, almond, soy), and
100% fruit or vegetable juice with no added sugar
➢ ADULTS
• Water with no additives, carbonated water with no sweeteners, non - flavored milk (non -fat
or low -fat), plant derived milk (rice, almond, soy), 100% fruit or vegetable juice with no
added sugar, non - sweetened beverages(coffee, tea, ice tea), and low -calorie beverages
(including diet and low calorie beverages that do not exceed 40 calories per 8 ounce
serving).

Fifty percent of all snacks and beverages in City vending machines shall be required to be healthy
