During the PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA portion of the

II. SECRETARY'S REPORT – The Library Commission agenda was posted on
April 9, 2021 in the City Hall kiosk at 9:56am and on the City website at
10:15am.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. February 10, 2021 – Commissioner Souza motioned to approve the
February meeting minutes. Chair Robinson seconded. Motion passed 4 -0-1
(Absent: Gonzalez).
IV. APPROVAL OF AGENDA – Commissioner Souza motioned to approve the
agenda. Chair Robinson seconded. Motion passed 4-0-1 (Absent: Gonzalez).
V. PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA – none.
VI. NEW BUSINESS – none.
VII. OLD BUSINESS
A. Library Commission Confirm Recommendation for the Upcoming Two-
year Budget Cycle. – The Commission confirmed their request for funding
in the upcoming two-year budget of $100 per fiscal year for training or
materials. The Commission will use the funds to either purchase books for
each of the five commissioners on the topic of advocating on behalf of the
library or to send a Commissioner(s) to training.

A. County Library Report for April 2021 (report attached) – Diane Roche,
Director of Communications and Marketing for Santa Clara County Library

District (SCCLD) presented the report. Starting on April 19, the libraries will
be expanding their hours to Monday through Saturday from 1:00 to 6:00pm.
They will be able to open at 50% occupancy and will therefore limit visits to
one hour so that more people can utilize the library. Curbside pickup service
will continue Monday through Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00pm. Steve
Fitzgerald, who has been with SCCLD since 2007 is the new County Deputy
Librarian. Roche recommending visiting the SCCLD website to see further
teen programming and to register for the virtual Distinguished Author series.
The Library Joint Powers Authority Board Meeting will be held on Thursday,
April 29 at 12:00pm.
B. Gilroy Library Report for April 2021 (report attached) – Wong shared the
Gilroy Library is currently averaging about 500 items per day, which is about
a 15% increase since reopening lobby service. They are averaging 1,500
grab-and-go meals a month and have a couple grant funded activities
planned for this summer. Wong shared a variety of upcoming events in the
month of April, including Dia De Los Ninos event and Bilingual Earth Day
Story Time. Commissioner Souza asked about increasing programming for
teens since Gilroy is the only school in the County not returning to any in-
person sessions for Middle and High School. Roche shared the Teen Open
Mic Night and recommended visiting the website current activities available
for teens through SCCLD. Wong thanked Souza for the question so that
further programming opportunities can be explored. Chair Robinson asked
about Library staff assisting with vaccination process and if that will continue
and about possible programming to help the community deal with the after-
effects of the pandemic since the library can reach people that aren’t being
reached by other avenues. Wong shared that there are some resources
available already on the website and said appreciated the feedback
because that can help them structure future programs. Roche explained the
role of the Disaster Service Worker (DSW) and that all County employees
are DSW’s. About 30% of the library staff have been supporting COVID-19
efforts, which will continue as needed with an unknown end date at this
time.
IX. COMMISSION COMMENTS – none.
X. STAFF COMMENTS – Sendejas reported the City Clerk’s Office confirmed the
Library Commission’s presentation to Council will be on Monday, October 18
and by the September 8th meeting, you should decide who will make the
presentation. Sendejas also reported the SCCLD placed a Summer Reading
Program ad in the Recreation Activity Guide that was mailed to homes in Gilroy
last week.

Recommendation:
Motion and vote for the selection of commission Vice-chair of Library Commission.
Executive Summary
Library Commission will motion to select a new vice-chair to serve the remainder of the
2021 calendar year. The vice-chair’s main function is to preside over the commission
meeting if the chair is absent.
Commissioner Gonzalez, who was serving in the vice-chair position, resigned from the
Library Commission in April 2021.

including animal visits, guest speakers, book clubs, magic shows, storytimes, STEAM, LEGO, and
more!

Getting all of your books for Summer Reading 2021 is easy with our Community Libraries and the

New Health Order = Expanded Access at SCCLD
On May 19, Santa Clara County moved to the Yellow Tier based on
the State Blueprint for a Safer Economy. This has allowed SCCLD to
lift our COVID-19 imposed safety occupancy limits as well as visitor
time limits. Patrons are welcome to visit our library locations anytime
during open hours to browse our full collection, use the public
computers and printers for up to three hours, utilize library resources
and services, and reserve a small or medium meeting room at the
Cupertino, Gilroy, Milpitas or Saratoga Library.
SCCLD has completed one full year of in-person library services
since we began offering curbside service in June 2020.

Social distancing protocols including maintaining a 6-ft distance from others and wearing a face
covering remain in place for all library visits until the health order mandate is no longer required.
SCCLD will continue to modify library services based on the health order guidelines, as well as
available staffing levels. The happy return of Disaster Service Workers in June or July will allow us to
expand hours and open up Woodland Library later this Summer. We will keep you informed on next
steps.
Tell Us How We’re Doing
During the pandemic, SCCLD modified and adapted
many of the resources and services to safely and
efficiently serve our communities. To inform our
future plans, we want to hear from our patrons.
From May 24 - June 30, SCCLD is asking our
patrons to provide feedback on which library
resources and services were most important to
them during the pandemic, and which they would be
likely to use post-pandemic.
The survey is online and should take less than 10
minutes to complete. We hope to gain direct
feedback from our communities to help advise our future plans.

Campbell Express Library is
Open!
The Campbell Library staff have been hard
at work and opened the new Campbell
Express Library, conveniently located in 1
W. Campbell Avenue, Building E, Room
46. It is next to the Orchard City Banquet
Hall in the Campbell Community Center.
This bright, cheerful facility with a park-like
setting offers Campbell patrons expanded
hours Monday-Thursday 10am-9pm and
Friday-Saturday from 10am-6pm. Visitors
can pick up holds, browse a limited
collection, and use the public computer and printer. Items can be returned through a book drop at the
entrance. Contactless curbside service is not available at the Express Library but is available at the
other SCCLD community libraries. Patrons are invited to visit the Cupertino, Saratoga or any
other SCCLD library for additional services.

Avid conservationist and intrepid explorer of California ecology and the natural
world, Obi Kaufmann is a native Californian. His award winning books include The
California Field Atlas, The State of Water: Understanding California’s Most Precious
Resource, and The Forests of California which feature hundreds of his watercolor
paintings of maps, wildlife, and other aspects of nature. Kaufmann depicts layer
after layer of the natural world, delighting in the grand scale and details alike.

Discover the history and philosophy of Zentangle and the simple
tools used. Learn and practice the Zentangle method including
patterns and techniques. Presented by Danielle de Roma,
Certified Zentangle Teacher.
Suggested Materials:
3.5" square white Zentangle tile (or quality paper like Bristol)
Soft graphite pencil (HB or 2HB)
Tortillion (blending stump, cotton swab, or make-up applicator)

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco will host the exhibition,
Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave. Focusing on
the love of food and drink in Pompeii, it will bring us into the world
of ancient Rome and into the finest homes of 79 A.D. before the
eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. We will look at frescos, mosaics, sculptures,
and decorative objects that adorned these beautiful villas. Please join
docent Beth Beisecker as she transports us into the lives of the rich
and famous Romans of the First Century A.D.
