II. SECRETARY'S REPORT – The Library Commission agenda was posted on
June 3, 2021 in the City Hall kiosk at 2:35pm and on the City website at
2:30pm.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. April 14, 2021 – Commissioner Souza motioned to approve the April
meeting minutes. Commissioner Reddy seconded. Motion passed 4-0-0.
IV. APPROVAL OF AGENDA – Commissioner Souza motioned to approve the
agenda. Commissioner Reddy seconded. Motion passed 4-0-0.
V. PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA – None.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
A. Selection of Vice-Chair of Library Commission – Commissioner
Gonzalez resigned in April 2021and she held the Vice -chair position.
Council needs to open the recruitment to fill the vacancy, which will be on
the agenda for the June 21, 2021 meeting. The Library Commission needs
to appoint a new Vice-chair, whose main function is to preside over the
commission meeting if the Chair is absent. Commissioner Souza has
previously served in this role but said she would do it if Commissioner
Coverson-Baxter didn’t want to do it. Commissioner Coverson-Baxter
accepted the nomination since there were only two meetings left this year.
Chair Robinson motioned to appoint Commissioner Coverson-Baxter as
Vice-chair for the 2021 calendar year. Commissioner Reddy seconded.
Motion passed 4-0-0.

VIII. LIBRARY REPORTS
A. County Library Report for June 2021 (report attached) – County
Librarian Jennifer Weeks presented the Santa Clara County Library District
(SCCLD) Stakeholder Report for June 2021. Weeks reported the Summer
Reading Program – Reading Colors Your World launched on June 1st. As
we moved to the Yellow Tier, SCCLD has removed COVID-19 imposed
occupancy limits, removed visitor time limits, extended computer use to
three hours and opened reservations for small and medium meeting rooms.
Weeks sees bright light at the end of the tunnel as we make our way out of
the pandemic. SCCLD has modified and adapted during the last year and
half and invited Commissioners to provide feedback by participating in a
survey posted on their website, which is available until June 30th. Campbell
Library, which is the oldest county library built, is being renovated and they
have opened the Campbell Express Library while construction is underway.
The Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Board meet on June 3rd and approved the
budget.
B. Gilroy Library Report for June 2021 (report attached) – Community
Librarian Cassandra Wong reported the library and the Friends Bookstore
are open, computers are available, limited seating is available and staff are
reassessing service plans in anticipation of changes to come on June 15th.
Circulation has increased dramatically since reopening – circulation is up
16% since last month and almost 50% since February. You can find the
schedule of Summer Reading Programs at sccld.org/events. The Library
has a series of virtual events for children on Wednesdays at 3pm (today’s
virtual magician had 400+ registrations). The Gilroy Library continues to
provide over 1,500 meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00-
5:00pm in partnership with Revolution Foods. Outreach continues at the
Ochoa Migrant Center, Power School, Gilroy Unified School District (GUSD)
Summer School and the Bookmobile will visit the Gilroy Youth Center on the
first Monday in July and August. Wong showed the video for summer
reading. Wong went through flyers that are in the meeting packet for
activities and events this summer at the Gilroy Library for youth, teens and
adults.
Souza shared that home-schooling participation increased dramatically
during the pandemic and that it was challenging to get the books at times
due to the demand. It’s unknown if home schooling will remain as popular
as we come out of the pandemic. Souza suggested increasing the number
of books in circulation for home school reading assignments, if possible.
Souza will send Wong some contact information for the home schools.
Wong thanked Souza for the community feedback and said they have a
very generous e-book budget and they can get access quicker and she will
have staff work with the home schools to try to get their lists ahead of time.
Coverson-Baxter echoed Souza’s sentiments and said it would be great if
the Library could have a home school resource section.
Coverson-Baxter asked if there is any planning for Juneteenth. The Library
will be closed for the holiday (first time County is honoring this holiday).
Wong said there is no speaker scheduled at this time, but they will have

their in-house events like story-time. Its currently Black Music Month and
they have a series of displays around this. Wong will pass Coverson-
Baxter’s comments to the Librarians. Reddy agreed with Coverson-Baxter
and said it would love to see a speaker series or some other way to focus
on Juneteenth.
Robinson shared that Catholic Charities is trying to step up their services in
South County. Given the breadth and depth of programming o ffered through
the Library, there may be opportunities to partner with Catholic Charities
and Robinson offered to pass the contact information to Wong if it makes
sense to collaborate. Week and Wong welcomed the contact information
and shared the SCCLD and Gilroy Library are in partnership with a lot of
community-based organizations (CBOs), including Catholic Charities, and
would like to develop those partnerships further when and where it makes
sense to work collective to make real change happen.
IX. COMMISSION COMMENTS – None.
X. STAFF COMMENTS – Staff Sendejas reported her interim assignment to
support the Commission has ended and Recreation Manager Adam Henig will
return to supporting the Commission for the September 8th meeting.
XI. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS – None.
XII. ADJOURNMENT – Commissioner Reddy motioned to adjourn the meeting at
7:58pm. Commissioner Souza seconded. Motion passed 4-0-0.

Welcome Back to Woodland Library!
As of Monday, June 21, 2021, we welcomed patrons
back inside Woodland Library for full browsing, holds
pickup, and public computer and printer use. The
Woodland Library is open Monday through
Saturday from 1 – 6 p.m. (excluding holidays).
Curbside service is not available at this location, but
you can make a curbside appointment with the Los
Altos Library, Cupertino Library, or any other SCCLD
location offering curbside holds pickup.

SCCLD Expands Open Hours Starting July 12
With the elimination of the State Blueprint for a Safer Economy, vaccination rates on the rise and the
gradual release of our Disaster Service Workers, SCCLD will once again expand our open hours
starting Monday, July 12 and we are tentatively planning to resume 7 day/week pre-pandemic hours
around mid-September.

community. Teens are encouraged to share their creativity in the virtual
Teen Art Gallery. Adults will benefit from our Zentangle booklist with
step by step instructions on this art form to help improve your focus,
relax and increase awareness.

New Scholastic Online Resources
As students prepare to start a new school year, SCCLD has added new online resources from a trusted
name, Scholastic. Students can learn about their favorite subjects in a dynamic and interactive way.
We are introducing five new online resources that encourage and support students to learn about
STEM, social studies, animals and more.
Watch and Learn Library for ages 3-8:
The Watch & Learn Library from Scholastic provides 230+
nonfiction videos, vocabulary lists, and quizzes for young
learners in grades PreK-3. The videos use real-world footage to
build science, social studies and social-emotional knowledge.
Closed captioning for each video supports beginning readers. Content available in English and
Spanish.
TrueFlix for ages 8-12:
TrueFlix is an online eBook service for children in grades 3-6 that offers
nonfiction True Books and multimedia content from Scholastic to help
students improve literacy skills, build knowledge of curriculum-based
Science and Social Studies content, and cultivate important academic
skills through the inquiry process. Content includes nonfiction and fiction
eBooks, primary sources, videos, audio clips, images, and related
websites. TrueFlix helps students improve literacy and critical thinking
skills, and build content-area knowledge.
FreedomFlix for ages 10-14:
FreedomFlix is a digital resource that dives deeply into the events,
people and places that have shaped our world. Students from age 10
to 14 can learn more about social studies with this interactive, digital
resource.
ScienceFlix for ages 10-15:
Scholastic ScienceFlix brings science education to students
with hands-on scientific experiments, in-depth STEM (science,
technology, engineering, math) career exploration, and
interactive videos, articles and lesson plans.

Mercury News? You can enjoy free access from inside the
library on library-provided computers, or on your own device
while connected to the Library’s Wi-Fi. In addition, we offer 24-
hour or 72-hour remote access.
For remote “home” access, visit this link and log in with your
library card number and PIN. You will be taken to a Welcome
page where you can choose between two options for remote
access:
Anonymous Access: Works for 24 hours. After that time, you will need to revisit the
Library’s subscription link to gain another 24-hour session.
Authenticated Access: Works for 72 hours. For this option, one must register for an
account using Google, Apple, Facebook or an email address to gain 72 -hour access. At the end

Local Teen Artist Brightens Up the Saratoga Teen Room
Santa Clara County is brimming with talent. The Saratoga Library has a brand new wall mural on the

ABOS Karen Hake Outstanding Bookmobile Librarian Award
Amytha Willard, Supervising Librarian for Bookmobile
Services, has been named the 2021 ABOS Karen Hake
Outstanding Bookmobile Librarian. She was selected in
recognition of her continuous dedication and
commitment to the bookmobile profession.
This is a new award from the Association of Bookmobile
and Outreach Services, which commemorates the 50th
anniversary of Karen Hake’s service to the bookmobile
profession at the Platte County Library System in
Columbus, Nebraska.
Amytha Willard has spent 16 years working for SCCLD,
all for the Bookmobile program. Today, the Bookmobile
has two vehicles that make over 100 stops a month at senior centers, schools, rural areas, and
unincorporated portions of the County that are far from any library. From the top of Mount Hamilton to
migrant camps in San Martin, and Family Literacy Centers to the Santa Cruz mountains, Willard and
the SCCLD Bookmobile team can be found all across Santa Clara County on a weekly basis,
crisscrossing over 1,000 square miles.
When SCCLD launched the Lunch in the Library program at its two qualifying libraries, Amytha looked
to extend the program to those communities in South County who needed it most by partnering with
Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley and San Martin Lion’s Club. The team served healthy
lunches to children throughout the summer months and offered fun and educational activities for kids
including STEM projects, crafts and a visit by the San Francisco 49ers mascot.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Willard and her team developed and implemented BookDash, a
contactless home-delivery solution to meet a need for the growing older adult community and for those
who could not get to a library during the pandemic due to family illness, injury, medical condition, or
disability. The SCCLD Bookmobile team delivers books right to a patron’s front door. BookDash
modernized, optimized and streamlined homebound service from 5 patrons to over 60 patrons with
capacity to expand the program.
The award will be presented at a ceremony on Tuesday, October 12 during an online Association of
Bookmobile and Outreach Services conference.

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month
Celebremos El Mes de la Herencia Hispana
National Hispanic Heritage Month originated as National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 during the
peak of the civil rights movement. Then in 1989 a presidential proclamation established National
Hispanic Heritage Month as a “31-day period beginning September 15 and ending on October 15" in
which the nation celebrates and honors the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and
Latinos in the United States. The date was chosen because it coincides with the Independence Day
celebrations of five Central American nations-Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico
and Nicaragua.
As of 2020, Hispanic and Latino Americans make up nearly 20% of the US population, and constitute
25% of Santa Clara County’s population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Hispanic Americans
have been influential in every part of this nation's history, from the arts to politics to business to
the military.
People of Hispanic and Latinx heritage encompass many different countries and cultures. Santa Clara
County Library District proudly presents a wide array of in person and virtual events, and Spanish and
bilingual books as well as Spanish e-book collection to enrich this month’s celebrations.
We hope you will join us for any of the following events to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana se originó como la Semana Nacional de la Herencia
Hispana en 1968 durante el apogeo del movimiento por los derechos civiles. Luego, en 1989,
una proclamación presidencial estableció el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana como un "período
de 31 días que comienza el 15 de septiembre y termina el 15 de octubre" en el que la nación celebra y
honra la cultura, los logros y las contribuciones de los hispanos y latinos en los Estados Unidos. La

Homework Help with SCCLD
Local schools are back in session and as many
students struggle after almost a year and a half
of distance and/or hybrid learning, SCCLD is
ready to help our local students be successful
this school year. SCCLD is offering Homework
Help in partnership with Bay Area Tutoring
Association (BATA). The next session will run
from September or October through mid-
December. Virtual homework pods are available
for grades K-6 who are not yet eligible for the
vaccination.
For 7th-12th grades, we will offer in-person homework pods with a maximum of 24 participants. The
homework pods are on-demand to allow students to attend on Monday/Wednesday or
Tuesday/Thursday for up to 90 minutes per session. For some, they may have a quick question and for
others, they may benefit from working with a tutor to review a lesson or assignment in more detail.
Bay Area Tutoring Association academic coach to student ratio is a maximum of 1:8. Peer to peer
instruction and collaboration encourages student engagement and mastery. All participants must live
within the Santa Clara County Library District.

Learn to use your Android or iOS Phone
Technology changes quickly and for some, including
older adults, learning to use your iOS (iPhone) or
Android phone can be challenging. SCCLD is offering
programs to help adults learn to use basic functions on
their cell phones using either iOS or Android operating
systems. Registration is required and these programs
will be in person with a maximum of 15 attendees per
class. A virtual event is still under development.

esperamos que le inspire a crear su propio
altar en casa. Este año honraremos a los

Cuento para niños de edad escolar para
celebrar el Día de Muertos y manualidad de
calaveras de azúcar presentado por Zoom (El
espacio es limitado. Se requiere inscripción).
Aprende sobre el Día de los Muertos con una
historia, aprende cómo se hacen las calaveras
de azúcar y formas fáciles de decorarlas. El
programa se presentará a través de Zoom.
