who recently joined the City of Gilroy Recreation Department. Monica then took a few minutes
to tell the Commissioners a few things about herself.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Wrap-up Christmas Give Away
Commissioner Gonzalez said that the event went really well and was successful. She
thanked the Commissioners who participated that day. She also especially thanked
Commissioner Sabharwal for working out in the cold and with the parents. Supervisor
Mireles-Janisch commented that the event coordinators said the Commissioners were
really good at engaging the kids and that Commissioners Cabatingan and Voorhees were
photographed and put in the Gilroy Dispatch article about the event. Overall, Supervisor
Mireles-Janisch encouraged Commissioners to participate in the Toy Give Away next
year. Commissioner Voorhees commented saying that it was difficult working with some
of the kids but that overall it went well.
B. Discussion on YAC Attack Workshops/T-shirt Design
Commissioner Cabatingan explained that she is planning to create the t-shirt design with
her friend this week. She then said that she needed the Commissioners to choose a
slogan. She shared some ideas and the Commission discussed possible slogans. The final
slogans to choose from were “Too Dope to Smoke,” “Chocking on Smoking,” Death
Checklist, “You Won’t Regret Putting Down the Cigarettes.” The votes were tallied and
there was a tie between the Dying Checklist and “You Won’t Regret Putting Down the
Cigarettes” so there was a final vote between the two. The majority won and it was “You
Won’t Regret Putting Down the Cigarette” that was chosen for the Youth Commission’s
t-shirt slogan. After voting on a slogan, the Youth Commission brainstormed possible
designs for Jessica to work with. Supervisor Mireles-Janisch reminded everyone that the
design had to follow guidelines and be submitted that weekend for the contest. Lastly,
food orders and t-shirt sizes for YAC Attack were recorded by Recreation Coordinator
Monica Sendejas.
C. Discussion on Senior Ball
Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch informed the Commissioners that the Youth
Commission received a grant of $2,000 from the Gilroy Rotary Club for the Senior
Citizens Ball. She then explained the budget and expenses for the event. Recreation
Coordinator Sendejas then passed out five (5) donation letters per Commissioner to
distribute to local businesses. Because of the monetary obstacle for having “extra” at the
Senior Ball, Supervisor Mireles-Janisch explained that the Commission had the choice of
bringing the event back at the Senior Center where decorations could be provided or
having the event at Christopher High School where we will need more decorations for the
large venue. It was stated that both venues are reserved for the Senior Ball and the
Commission just has to make their choice. Discussion then followed with the pros and
cons of each venue. Commissioner Filice agreed to attend the Senior Center’s Valentine’s
Dance on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 5 p.m. to see the venue and event; she will
report back to the Commission at the February 13, 2012 meeting where the Commission
will make their final decision on the venue for the Senior Ball.
D. Discussion on Shadowing a Councilmember
Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch said that she talked to City Clerk Shawna Freels about
wanting to get a date that would work with the City Council to have a social with the City
Council and possibly shadow them. City Clerk Shawna Freels is not able to get a date
that would work with Council. Supervisor Mireles-Janisch recommended that
Commissioner Filice talk to the Mayor, inform him of our ideas, and possibly have him
pick a date and time. Supervisor Mireles-Janisch reminded Commissioners Cabatingan
and Medina that they agreed to coordinate the meet and greet with council.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Informational Presentation on the New Gilroy Library
Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch explained that the City of Gilroy Publication
Information Officer Joe Kline was supposed to speak to the Commission but was not able
to attend because he had another scheduled meeting that night with council. Supervisor
Mireles-Janisch then stated that the Youth Commission has been invited to get a tour of
the new Gilroy library and said it was best to go as soon as possible. Discussion then
followed about a date and time that would work for the majority of the Commission.
Supervisor Mireles-Janisch said that she will e-mail the Commission with a set date and
time regarding the tour.
AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING
