02/13/2012 Youth Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 03/12/2012CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING 6:00 P.M. Monday, February 13, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m. by Chairman Filice. ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Commissioners Cabatingan and Medina who were not excused. Commissioners Medina arrived at 6:10 p.m. Others present: Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mo McHenry, Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki, Recreation Specialists Julian Mireles and Terrell Worthy. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Commissioner Triolo motioned and Commissioner Kang seconded to approve the January 9, 2012 minutes. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Commissioner Kang so moved and Commissioner Vorhees seconded the approval of the February 13, 2012 agenda. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commissioner Wykoff attended the City of Gilroy Council Meeting on February 6, 2012. He reported that the meeting primarily centered on Patrick Dinsmore accepting a certificate for his cause on protecting wildlife species. He also reported other Council agenda items to the Commission. Commissioner Kang did not attend the Gilroy Gang Task Force meeting. INTRODUCTIONS Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch introduced Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki and Recreation Specialists Julian Mireles and Terrell Worthy. Anna Bielecki was introduced as the new supervisor for the Youth Commission. Everyone then took the time to introduce and tell a little about themselves. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Informational Presentation on the New Gilroy Library Commissioner Gonzalez reported that the Commission took a tour of the new library which is under construction. Overall the tour was successful and everyone enjoyed visiting the new building. The library was said to be opening this spring. At the end of the tour, Commissioner Gonzalez thanked their tour guide Dan Johnson on behalf of the Youth Commission; and the Commission gave him a thank you card. B. Discussion on YAC Attack Workshops/T-shirt Design Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki reported that she had talked to the YAC Attack Advisors and stated there was going to be a meeting for the advisors of commissions of different cities on Wednesday but she is unable to attend that meeting. Recreation Coordinator Bielecki told the Commission that she will let them know the results of the t- shirt contest winner. Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch reminded the Commissioners that the YAC Attack will be on March 3, 2012; everyone is expected to go other than Commissioner Kang who has been excused. C. Discussion on Senior Ball Commissioner Filice attended the Senior Center’s Valentine’s Dance on February 11, 2012 to see how the venue was set up for a big event. Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch explained that the decision to return the Senior Ball to the Senior Center was made due to expenses and the budget the Commission has to work with. She heard it was amazing and beautiful and believes the move is a positive thing for the event. Supervisor Judy Mireles- Janisch reminded the Commission that they received a grant from the Rotary Club of $2,000 and that the Commissioners need to send out donation request letters in order to cover the expenses of the Senior Ball. Supervisor Mireles-Janisch then stated that at the Senior Center we will receive help from Sandra Sammut who is in charge of decorating the Senior Center. Commissioner Filice then stated that the Valentine’s dance was beautiful and believes the Senior Ball can be just as beautiful. Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki said that with the Senior Ball, the Commission is going to go bigger and better and really work with the Hollywood theme. Senior Ball tickets have been printed and will go on sale February 21, 2012 for $6 a ticket. Recreation Anna Bielecki explained that the Senior Ball has already been advertised with fliers and announcements at the Valentine’s Dance. Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch asked Commissioners to give updates on donation letters. Commissioner Gonzalez gave a donation received from Cielito Lindo Restaurant as a raffle prize. Commissioners Spaeth and Sabharwal brought in $121.72 from the sale of reusable bags and donations. Supervisor Judy commended the Commissioners and challenged the others to do the same. NEW BUSINESS A. Organizational Changes for City of Gilroy Youth Commission Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch explained that she will no longer be facilitating the Youth Commission meetings and that Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki will be taking her position. Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch stated that Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki has great connections and will make things happen with the Youth Commission. B. Kids Discover Arts Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki explained what Kids Discover Arts is. She asked the Commission if they were interested in being vendors at this event where the money raised would go to the Senior Ball. The event will be at the Wheeler Auditorium on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and the Commissioners would work in shifts throughout the day. Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki explained that if the Commission does agree to be vendors, they would buy food to sell at the event. She then asked for feedback from the Commission and asked them to brainstorm some possible items to sell. Discussion followed. Chairman Filice agreed to work with Recreation Coordinator Anna Bielecki on finalizing a menu. Commissioner Medina moved and Commissioner Kang seconded the motion to sell food items as a fundraiser at the Kids Discover Art event. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. C. Committee Reports Supervisor Judy Mireles-Janisch reminded the Commissioners that they made a commitment and need to attend their designated meetings. If they are unable to attend, they need to contact the Youth Commission Chairman. AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING • Follow up on donation letters for Senior Ball as well as the sales of the reusable “green” bags the commissioners are to be selling for a donation of $5 each. • Annual Council Presentation p on May 7, 2012 • EDD Job Fair March 13, 2012 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Filice adjourned the meeting at 6:40 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Youth Commission will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room. __________________________________ Commissioner Gonzalez Recording Secretary
