03/12/2012 Youth Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 05/14/2012CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING 6:00 P.M. Monday, March 12, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m. by Chairman Filice. ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Commissioners Vorhees and Medina who were not excused. Commissioner Vorhees arrived at 6:17 and Commissioner Medina arrived at 6:20 p.m. There was a request for a review of Commissioner Medina’s absences. Others present: Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Commissioner Cabatingan motioned and Commissioner Wykoff seconded to approve the February 13, 2012 minutes. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Commissioner Kang moved and Commissioner Cabatingan seconded the approval of the March 12, 2012 agenda. Hearing no objection, it was so ordered. COMMITTEE REPORTS Commissioner Wykoff attended the City of Gilroy Council Meeting on February 27, 2012. He reported that the meeting primarily centered on the High Speed Rail. As reported by Commissioner Wykoff, the main issue the council members had was the cost of $191 million for the city of Gilroy. He also reported other Council agenda items to the Commission. Commissioner Kang attended the Gilroy Gang Task Force meeting. At this meeting, it was reported that there were 3 gang-related incidents: 1 dealing with possession of weapons and the other two dealt with gang slurs, and there was also a shooting on Montebello Drive. Commissioner Kang also reported that the Youth Center is having a fundraiser on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Chevy’s. INTRODUCTIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Report on YAC Attack – Attended Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki reported that most of the Commissioners attended YAC Attack. She then asked for the Commission to provide feedback and/or comments about the conference. Commissioners who attended the YAC Attack event spoke about their favorite workshops and possible events to consider for next year. B. Report on KDA Concession Fundraising Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki thanked the Commissioners for working the event and said that it was a blast. It was reported that the Youth Commission made a total of $70 in profit. $270 was raised but $200 was spent on buying the food that was to be sold. There was left over food at the end of the event and it was donated to the After School Program. The second shift was reported to be busier than the first shift. Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki then asked for feedback. Commissioner Filice suggested having advertisement, such as signs. Commissioner Gonzalez reported that there were signs about Concession stand but that it was lost in the event because there were a lot of signs in the building. Commissioner Filice then suggested using neon signs as well as having a sign at the entrance directing to the Concession stand. Commissioner Triolo suggested that next time instead of buying a lot of food, to have food runs so that the Commission won’t lose profit. The Commission agreed that they had fun and would like to do this fundraising event again. C. Discussion on Senior Ball Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki reported that tickets for the Senior Ball are going fast and close to selling out. Commissioners Filice and Gonzalez will be attending the City Council meeting to encourage Council members to attend the event. Supervisor Anna Bielecki contacted the caterer and band for the event to double confirm. Some decorations for the Senior Center have been ordered by Recreation Supervisor Sandra Sammut. Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki encouraged the Commissioners to think about what role each Commissioner wants to have for this event and make the event as successful as can be. It was asked that each Commissioner bring in 1 (one) volunteer to help with the event and there will be other volunteers as well. Commissioner Filice then suggested to section off areas to each Commissioner. Friday, April 27th will be dedicated to setting up the Senior Center and all Commissioners are required to attend. The morning of Saturday, April 28th will be focused on setting up balloons for the event. Discussion on fundraising then followed. Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki then reminded the Commissioners to raise money for the event, send out donation letters. Commissioner Medina sold 8 (eight) reusable Youth Commission bags for $5 each and Commissioner Carlisle received a donation from Stubby’s Sports Bar for the event. Commissioner Cabatingan said that she would contact a volunteer she knows that can help with balloon decorations, and she will contact Anna on what supplies the Commission will need to provide. Discussion and ideas about the photo booth for the Senior Ball then followed. NEW BUSINESS A. Development on New GYC Logo and Shirts Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki told the Commission that she believes that the Youth Commission should present themselves as a professional group and brought up the idea of creating a new logo and ordering new shirts and/or sweaters. The Commission declared that they would love to create something new and have the shirts/sweaters ready by the end of this term. Discussion continued about clothing for the Youth Commission. Commissioner Filice then asked the other Commissioners to come to the next meeting prepared with ideas for a new logo. Further discussion will continue at the April regular meeting. AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING Fundraising Ideas Family Senior Night in May STAFF COMMENTS The City of Gilroy Youth Center is having a fundraiser at Chevy’s Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 5:00 P.M. -- 9:00 P.M. Also the Youth Center will be having a summer kick-off fun-fair in June and will need volunteers.
