MINUTES OF THE REGULAR
YOUTH COMMISION MEETING
7:00 P.M.
Monday, January 13, 2014
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki.
INTRODUCTIONS
New Youth Commissioner Alexis Pena Tomasetti, a senior at GECA, was introduced.
ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT
All Commissioners were present.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Commissioner Baxter motioned to approve the minutes and Chair Miner seconded that
motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
Commissioner Filice motioned to approve the agenda and Commissioner Baxter seconded
the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Commissioner A. Sabharwal and Commissioner Straub reported on the City Council Meeting
and Commissioner Baxter reported on the Gilroy Gang Task Force Meeting.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Recap of Annual Retreat on November 26, 2013.
Vice-Chair Filice went over ideas discussed during the retreat and Commissioner Miner advised
the group to focus on three key areas. Adopt the Youth Center led by Commissioner Filice,
Youth Center Improvement led by Commissioner Baxter, and Pampered Princess Party led by
Commissioner Carpenter. Commissioner Carpenter discussed the progress of her event called
the Pampered Princess Party and February 22nd was agreed to be potential date for the event to
be held at the Wheeler Center. Commissioner Carpenter provided details of her vision for this
event. Ideas for Adopt the Youth Center and Youth Center Improvement were discussed as well.
B. Continued Discussion Re: Fundraising Efforts.
Commissioner Navarro and Commissioner Sabharwal provided details on materials needed for a
potential fundraiser at Safeway. Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki provided
possible ideas for additional fundraisers and discussion followed.
C. Treasurer’s Report.
Commissioner Baxter provided details on spreadsheet for the financial status of the Gilroy Youth
Commission.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Planning for Annual Senior Ball on April 19, 2014
Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki presented a brief summary of the Senior Ball and
Youth Commission roles. Ideas for a theme were discussed and the group agreed on the Roaring
Twenties.
B. Planning for YAC Attack on March 1, 2014
Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Anna Bielecki gave a brief overview of the YAC Attack and asked
the Youth Commissioners to confirm their attendance to the event. Ms. Bielecki encouraged the
group to host a debate at the event and possible debate topics were discussed .
AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING
None.
STAFF COMMENTS
Recreation Coordinator/Advisor Bielecki took a moment to thank Commissioner Carpenter for
her work at Breakfast with Santa. Ms. Bielecki also reminded the Youth Commission about
following up with reminders on responsibilities and important dates.
ADJOURNMENT
Youth Commission Chair Miner adjourned the meeting at 8:15 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Youth Commission will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014
at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
