YOUTH COMMISION MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chair Filice.

ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT
Members Present: Carpenter, Drews, Fajardo, Filice, Garnica, O’Connor, Plaza, A. Sabharwal,
Yafai
Members Absent: Lombardo, P. Sabharwal
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Commissioner Drew motioned to approve the minutes of January 11, 2016 and
Commissioner Fajardo seconded the motion.
The motion carried (9-0-2, Commissioners Lombardo and P. Sabharwal were absent).
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
Commissioner Garnica motioned to approve the agenda for February 8, 2016, and
Commissioner Fajardo seconded the motion.
The motion carried (9-0-2, Commissioners Lombardo and P. Sabharwal were absent).
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Each Commissioner shared something new or interesting that had happened throughout the
week.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. College Application Workshop Proposal
The item was moved to next month’s meeting due to Commissioner Lombardo’s absence.
B. Las Animas Park Improvement Proposal
Commissioner Garnica gave an overview of her idea and asked for support to ensure the
project continues to move forward after she graduates.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Mixer with San Juan Bautista Youth Commission, Friday, February 19, 2016
This mixer will be held at the Willey House in Gilroy from 5-7 p.m. Commissioner
Carpenter agreed to take the lead in planning the activities.
B. YAC Attack Workshop Proposal
YAC Attack will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016. Commissioner Filice shared his
idea of including the Pampered Princess Party, Senior Ball and Basketball Clinic. The
Commission’s goal is to have a PowerPoint presentation ready as soon as possible.
C. Pampered Princess Party, Saturday, March 12, 2016
Commissioner Carpenter advised the location for this event will be the Willey House.
She outlined her plan to split the house into stations, with crafts and hair done inside and
nails out on the deck. The backyard will be used for activities and a food area.
D. Basketball Clinic, Saturday, March 26, 2016
Event will be held at the Cesar Chavez Gym. Commissioner Filice will make the flyer
and begin advertising.
E. Youth Fashion Show
Commissioner Carpenter will have more on this event at next month’s meeting.
F. Development of a Gilroy Community Center
The Commission brainstormed potential ways to get community center for Gilroy. The
Commission will look into joint agreements, talk to companies, propose the idea to City
Council and see if we can talk to locals who will support the idea. It is the responsibility
of the Youth Commission to continue doing more research.

at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
