YOUTH COMMISION MEETING
7:00 P.M.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. by Chair Filice.
INTRODUCTIONS
Pranavi Kethanaboyina, a Sophomore at GECA, presented to the group and asked their advice on
implementing the Miss CEO program here in Gilroy.
ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Commissioner A. Sabharwal motioned to approve the minutes of February 8, 2016 and
Commissioner Fajardo seconded the motion.
The motion carried (7-0-4, Commissioners Garnica, Plaza, P. Sabharwal and Yafai were
absent).
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
Commissioner Lombardo motioned to approve the agenda for March 14, 2016, and
Commissioner Filice seconded the motion.
The motion carried (7-0-4, Commissioners Garnica, Plaza, P. Sabharwal and Yafai were
absent).
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. College Application Workshop Proposal
Commissioner Lombardo would like to lay the groundwork for this event for
implementation next year. The idea is to provide workshops for high school seniors to
help them navigate the college application process.
B. Las Animas Park Improvement Proposal
In Commissioner Garnica’s absence, Advisor Bielecki provided an update. The idea is to
partner with the City’s Creek Clean-Up event in September and provide resources for the
local homeless population.
C. Basketball Clinic, Saturday, March 26, 2016
Advisor Bielecki will ensure the necessary supplies are available for the event. The
group suggested using “Nextdoor” as a marketing tool for the event.
D. Youth Fashion Show
Commissioner Carpenter would like to hold this event in downtown Gilroy in May. She
is looking at having the clothes donated from local businesses.
E. Development of a Gilroy Community Center
The group discussed the magnitude of this project and decided that a first course of action
should be to invite the Mayor to a meeting in order to communicate the needs/wants of
our local youth.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Combining “Superhero Extravaganza” with Party in the Park Event
In Commissioner Garnica’s absence, Advisor Bielecki provided an update. The
Superhero Extravaganza will be held on August 12, 2015 in conjunction with the annual
Party in the Park event at San Ysidro Park.

Commissioner Filice adjourned the meeting at 7:54 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Youth Commission will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016
at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
