09/12/2012 Library Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 10/10/2012CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at 7: 05 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California. SECRETARY'S REPORT All five commissioners were present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion by Commissioner Taylor and seconded by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) to approve the minutes of August 8, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) and seconded by Commissioner Armenta to approve the Agenda of September 12, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS Parks and Recreation Commissioner Julie Garcia attended the meeting. She stated that each P & R Commissioner adopts another Commission and the library was an area of interest to her. PRESENTATIONS None. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION None. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library Commissioner Spencer presented infornlation on various library donor policies from other cities that she researched on the Internet. B. Discussion of Possible Ways for Library Commission to Honor Deceased Members Two benches were purchased in honor of Kathleen Smith and Tom Engebretson. LIBRARY REPORTS County Librarian, Nancy Howe Job Scout — This program is a new online platform designed to get people back to work by teaching them important Internet skills and job - hunting techniques. This pilot project with the California State Library uses social games designed to engage users in self -paced online activities that focus on Internet skills applied in a real life context such as: Easy -to -use resume builder; Basic Internet Lessons; Lessons on LinkedIn, Gmail, Fac ebook; Built -in Job Search and Ability to Interact with Other Job Seekers. JobScout and other online career help can be found on the Library website. September is Library Card Sign -up Month. Santa Clara County Libraries will participate with libraries across the country to encourage individuals to get a library card. The Library is also in the process of renewing student cards. Over 8,000 free cards have been issued to non - resident youth from pre - school through grade 12 throughout the year. As a part of outreach efforts to local schools, the library will send a letter to school principals so they know their students are eligible for the free card, regardless of residence. City Librarian, Lani Yoshimura Personnel — Library page Denise Leverton remains on medical leave. Senior Library Clerk Socorro Alfaro has returned to work after a medical leave. Gilroy Library conducted interviews for 3 extra -help pages and interviewed Children's Supervising Librarian candidates on September 7, 2012. School Starts — Since school began the traffic in the library has been steady, but lighter than expected. Staff greeted the public at the entrances the first three weeks, and has handed out about 2,500 flyers with the library rules. Flyers will now be handed out at peak times only. Special Programs — In addition to the regular programs; including regular and bi- lingual storytimes, book club, computer classes, conversation classes, teen movies and poetry readings, the following special events took place in August: Vamos a Leer Let's Read) — Saturday, August 25, 2012 (12 :00 — 1:00pm). More than 350 parents and children participated in a presentation by popular Univision Radio personality Jose Luis Gonzalez. "El Zorro" showed parents the importance of their involvement in their children's educational development and encouraged reading through an interactive storytime, games and prizes. Two Genealogy Workshops — The first session showed how to use Ancestry.com, HeritageQuestandotherresearchresources. The second one showed how to use the National Archives for research on naturalization and immigration port records and the newly released 1940's USCensus. Teen Volunteer Orientation Meeting — This was for teens 14 -19 years old who are interested in helping the library and earning community service hours. Adult Volunteer Orientation Meet_ ina — Ten people (18 years old and above) attended the meeting. Comin Inn September — Creative Writing Club (Sept. 13 and 27). Friends of the Gilroy Library Book Sale (Sept. 8 from 10:00am — 1:00pm). Page 2 of 3 Baby Storytime — introduce your baby (up to 12 months old) to music, nursery rhymes and stories on Thursdays (Sept. 6 -- Oct. 10 at 10:30am). COMMISSION COMMENTS Chair Smith (Carol) congratulated Nancy Howe on her appointment as County Librarian. She was the Acting County Librarian after Melinda Cervantes moved. STAFF COMMENTS None.
