12/12/2012 Library Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 01/09/2013CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at 7: 03 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California. SECRETARY'S REPORT Four commissioners were present. Commissioner Taylor was excused. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion by Commissioner Armenta and seconded by Commissioner Spencer to approve the minutes of November 14, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) and seconded by Commissioner Armenta to approve the Agenda of December 12, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS None. PRESENTATIONS None. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION None. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library Discussion will occur at a later date. B. Discussion of Work Plan at Los Altos Library Chair Smith gave a copy of the 2012 Los Altos Library Goals, which she received from Cindy Hill, to the Commissioners to read and discuss at a later date. LIBRARY REPORTS Deputy County Librarian, Derek Wolfgram Focus on Food — The Library District is launching a new program series this spring called Focus on Food that will feature programs for children, teens and adults at every library location. The programs, which are scheduled to take place from late January through May of 2013, will include: live food demonstrations, author discussions, hands -on food preparation, health and wellness talks, as well as presentations about various aspects of farming and growing food. Presenters include a wide variety of chefs, authors /food writers, healthy eating and other types of food specialists from around the greater Bay area. Hopefully, there will be at least one cooking demonstration by celebrity chef and television personality Martin Yan. Along with the food - focused programs, the libraries will also feature book displays, contests and other food - related activities aimed at highlighting the library top -rated collection of materials. These include cookbooks, food magazines and DVD's, and a wide variety of non - fiction books for foodies" of all ages. Customer Satisfaction Survey — SCCLD launched an ongoing customer satisfaction survey in English, Spanish, and Chinese that will help the Library make data - driven decisions about library services. Over 2,500 responses have already been received since the survey went live on November 15. Staff is in the process of analyzing results to find out what patrons love, and how services can be improved. To take the survey, go to the "Take Our Survey" link under the heading "Your Voice" at the bottom of any page on the SCCLD website. World Wall Project — All the libraries participated in a system -wide World Wall project earlier this fall. Every library received a special binder, poster and half -page feedback sheets for patrons and staff at each location to record their answers to the following question: How does the Library add value to your life? A wonderful variety of amazing positive responses were received that describe, in patrons own words, what a difference the Library makes. eBook Training Sessions — As the holiday season approaches, SCCLD staff is consistently asked for recommendations on buying eReaders or tablets from the plethora of products available such as Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony and iPad. In addition to providing sources for unbiased overviews of eReaders and tablets, library staff is offering eBook training events at some of our district libraries throughout the month of December. These sessions allow the public to have hands -on experience with the latest devices, learn which of these best suits their needs and budget, and to find out which devices work with thousands of our free eBooks. Training sessions are scheduled for: Gilroy (Dec. 1), Saratoga (Dec. 8), Los Altos (Dec. 10) and Cupertino (Dec. 12). Library patrons can also learn how to load eBooks and library eContent on their own devices during personal consultation sessions at the Cupertino Library throughout December and January. The Library's Electronic Resources Librarian will be offering eReader assistance on December 3, 10, 17, and January 14 and 28. Patrons can schedule an appointment for up to 30 minutes for a personal e- Reader consultation on the Library's website by visiting www.seel.org/at- your - service. City Librarian, Lani Yoshimura Personnel — Library Clerk Yolanda Provencio will retire at the end of December, after working for the Gilroy Library for more than 30 years. She is well -loved by the community and will be greatly missed. The Library is hosting a low -key gathering for her on Friday, December 21 at noon. Children's Services Librarian Denise Fromm will retire in January. She worked as an on -call librarian from 1996 -2001 and then took a permanent position with the County Library on January 22, 2001. FRIENDS of the Gilroy Library — The Friends group held its first members -only book sale in early December. The Friends have regular hours for book sale on Tuesdays and Fridays. Library Facility — The library roof HVAC units have been replaced. Hopefully, the units will work as they should. It has been very cold in the Lobby and in the Reading Room. Page 2 of 3 Programs in November — There were 15 Children's Programs with an attendance of 447. The 7 Teen programs had 161 people, and 272 attended the 43 Adult programs. Children's Program — Sharon Kelly has been at the Gilroy Library for one month. She has already been active with Gilroy children's programs and is currently serving on system -side committees. Sharon will do a series of baby lap -sit sessions at Mt. Madonna High School with the teen mothers starting January. The Library is also planning to host the Reading Buddies Programs. Volunteers — The Library recorded 352 volunteer hours last month. January Calendar of Events — Preschool Storytime (Ages 3 -5) is held on Thursdays and Bilingual Family Storytime on Saturdays (Both are at 10:30am). ESL Conversation Club meets every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Create fun and festive crafts at the Children's Holiday Crafts Dec. 22) or a festive glittery tree at Teen Holiday Crafts (Dec. 1). The Library will take a family picture for patrons to make a personalized photo card at Drop -In Holiday Photo Cards Dec. 8). Explore your options at eBook Reader Basics (Dec. 1). View the tech -crafty demonstrations at the Tech Shop Event (Dec. 11). Four movies will be shown in December including the Teen Movie Men in Black 3 (Dec. 12) and Family Movies: Paranorman (Dec. 5), Arthur Christmas (Dec. 19), The Odd Life of Timothy Green (Dec. 26), and Family Holiday Short Movies: Dragons -Gift of the Night Fury, Kung Fu Panda Holiday and Ice Age=A Mammoth Christmas Special (Dec. 22). Learn how to reduce stress and improve health at the Meditation Workshop (Dec. 20). Join the Garlicky Group of Poets for Open Poetry Readings Dec. 8). The Book Club will discuss The Host by Stephenie Meyer (Dec. 7). The Library will be closed on December 25U' and January 1St. See www.seel.org for more information. COMMISSION COMMENTS Chair Smith thanked Commissioner Armenta for her 8 years of service on the Library Commission and wished her well. Her terra will expire at the end of this month. STAFF COMMENTS None, FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS The Library Commission would like to discuss the condition of the HVAC system, which has been replaced.
