CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith at
7: 03 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
Four commissioners were present. Commissioner Cooper was excused.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Taylor to approve the minutes of July 10, 2013. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner Spencer.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner Taylor to approve the agenda of August 14, 2013. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner Smith (Hugh).

OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library
This item will be discussed in greater detail when more information is available. Chair
Smith mentioned that she read an article about the City of Gilroy's Bench Plaque
Program in the Gilroy Recreation Activity Guide, and suggested that the Commission
keep the idea in mind.
B. Discussion of Gilroy Library Commission Work Plan
This item will be tabled until more information is available from Lani Yoshimura.
Deputy County Librarian, Derek Wolfaram
The Library continues to focus on the same two issues this month: Summer Reading and the
Election.
Besides encouraging all ages to read 5 books this summer, the Library is also teaching adult
reading skills through the Library District's Reading Program.
There are 40 learners waiting for trained volunteer tutors from the Reading Program. Tutor
orientation sessions are scheduled, and the Library hopes to get the learners quickly matched
with volunteers.
Election Updates:
The second mailer to District residents has been mailed. It is an informational piece.
The FAQs have been updated. It can be found on the website at secl.org or on the pink
flyers inside the Library.
Measure A is the only item on the ballot.
Ballots were mailed to registered voters in the District on July 29. Ballots must be
returned by August 27, 2013.
August 12 was the last day to register to vote.
Measure A asks the voters to "renew" the existing tax rate that has been in place for 20
years. The cost is still $33.66 /year for a residential property with varying rates for other
types of property. The fall rates and method chart is on the Library's website.

4• PERSONNEL
Annie Chiu has accepted the coded half -time library clerk position. Currently, the library has
the following coded vacancies: 2 half -time library pages, and a full -time librarian Ill[ in Adult
Services. Another coded half -time library page is on leave. We are interviewing for one of
the coded half -time library page positions this week.
LIBRARY FACILITY
A large double -pane window on the south side of the building off of the Cafe was shattered.
The alleged suspect is a man, possibly homeless, who had a supermarket shopping cart
and a golf club in his possession. The incident happened at approximately 5am.

Program Highlights
SUMMER READING CLUBS FOR ALL AGES
So far Summer Reading Club numbers have more than doubled over last year:
1201 children
166 Teen
150 adult

d4 POWER SCHOOL
We had a very successful summer program with Power School. Classes from both El Roble and
Eliot Schools visited the library, and Sharon also visited Power School. We extended the
Summer Reading Club program into the schools and kids have been signing up. Sharon Kelly,
Kelly McKean and Lani Yoshimura each attended large family open house events at Eliot, El
Roble and Brownell schools.
4.4 GILROY GARDENS
The first 100 free pass visitors went through the Gilroy Garden gates. Gilroy residents using
their library cards 5 times during the summer were eligible for free admission to Gilroy Gardens.
The program extends into November, and we expect more people will go through in August.

Learn about our city's past from Elizabeth Barratt and Claudia Salewske. There will be an
opportunity to purchase their books which benefit the Gilroy Museum.
Saturday, August 10th at 3:30pm Open Poetry Readings with the Garlicky Group of Poets.
