CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at
7: 13 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th. Street Gilroy, California.

For the 12" consecutive year, the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) has been rated
among the top public libraries in the United States. This year for the first time, SCCLD was
awarded the top rating of five stars, and ranked fourih among larges libraries in the LibraryJournalIndexofPublicLibraryServicein2013. Library Journal, which is the library field's
leading professional publication, developed its national ranking of public libraries from per
capita statistics. The ratings are based on four categories, including library visits, circulation,
program attendance and public Internet computer use. Libraries were grouped by annual
expenditures and then rated according to these four statistical categories. Among public
libraries in this category, SCCLD was one of only five institutions in the nation to earn a five
star rating. This year's ranking relied on 2011 data that libraries reported to the federal Institute
of Museum and Library Services.
The next Santa Clara County Library District ( SCCLD) Joint Powers Authority (JPA) meeting
will be Thursday, January 30 at the newly opened Services and Support Center at 1370 Dell
Avenue in Campbell. The agenda will include the Five -Year Financial Forecast, Annual
progress report on the Technology Plan, and approval of the 2014 JPA meeting schedule. The
2013 JPA Chair is Jason Baker of Campbell, and the Vice -Chair is Emily Lo of Saratoga. The
JPA Finance Committee will meet at the Services and Support Center on Thursday, January 16.
Both meetings are open to the public.
The 2014 Friends, Commissioners, Foundation and Endowment members Forum will be held
on Saturday, February 1 from 9 :00am to 12:00pm. The Forum, which brings together library
volunteers from across the District, will be held at the new Services and Support Center in
Campbell. There will be 2 speakers who will discuss both the history and the future of .the
Santa Clara County Library, which is especially significant as the Library celebrates 100 years
of service in 2014. Susan Fuller, County Librarian from1985 -2002 and Dr. Sandra Hirsh,
Director of the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University will take
a look back at SCCLD milestones and also a look to the future of how public libraries are
adapting to changing needs. Robin Sloan, author of the Silicon Valley Reads selection, Mr.
Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, will also be a special guest. There will be a choice of small
group presentations on library services including: new digital services, Silicon Valley Readsandthebudget. There will also be an optional lunch and opportunities for touring the new
building.
The Silicon Valley Reads Kick -off event will be January 22 at 7:45pm (doors open at 6:45pm)
at the Campbell Heritage Theatre, comer of Winchester Blvd. and Campbell Avenue. SCCLD
is a proud co- presenter of Silicon Valley Reads, and all nine SCCLD city support groups have
made contributions to support this unique community reading program. There will be 100+ free
events from January through March. Copies of the full program brochure will be distributed at
each Commission meeting.
The Wi -Fi networks at all SCCD libraries have been upgraded. According to Information
Systems Manager Sanjeev Singla, recent upgrades have resulted in the following: The
networks are faster. There is more expansive coverage at each library. The numbers of access
points and bandwidth have doubled. Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are now allowed. There
is a user- friendly splash screen that is easier to use with the latest tablets and e- readers. Video
phone service for the deaf can be used on the Library District's Wi -Fi networks. The Wi -Fi
networks are FREE for all users, and no library card is required.
Mr. Wolfgram showed a PowerPoint and then distributed handouts on the SCCLD Customer
Satisfaction Survey, and also on Santa Clara County Library Statistics. See attached reports. A

STAFF COMMENTS
The Commission was reminded that 2014 Officers will be elected at the next meeting.
FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Items A & B will remain on the agenda. Election of officers for 2014 will be added to the
agenda for the February 12, 2014 meeting.
