Sixth Street Gilroy, CA 95020 MINUTES Page 1 of 3 I. CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Whitney at 7:05 p.m. II. SECRETARY'S REPORT The Agenda and Packet were posted on the City website on November 7, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Michaela Gonzalez, Sumana Reddy (7:10 p.m.), Kathy Souza, Katherine Robinson, Candice Whitney III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Gonzalez, seconded by Commissioner Robinson to approve the September 11, 2019 meeting minutes. Mo tion carried with a vote of 5-0-0. IV. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion was made by Commissioner Robinson; seconded by Commissioner Gonzalez to approve the November 13, 2019 Agenda. Motion carried with a vote of 5-0-0. V. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCL) received major honors for innovative programs and services. The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) recognized Rise Up, a partnership between the Gilroy Library and various County agencies, including the District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Child and Family Services. Working closely with the South County Youth Task Force and County partner agencies, Rise Up was created as an intervention program designed to educate and support at-risk youth and their families to improve their lives and outcomes. VI. INTRODUCTIONS None. Page 2 of 3 VII. PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA None. VIII. OLD BUSINESS A. Report on Library Improvements The Library is working with an architect, who is preparing cost estimates for the Courtyard Improvements. Staff is also assessing other building “needs” where the Bond Fund money (approximately $5million) could best be applied. Possibilities include expanding the Children’s Storytime Area, and dividing upstairs rooms to create a Maker Space. B. Discussion of Library Commission Goals The Commission wants to meet with the GUSD School Board. Lani mentioned that GUSD staff is very busy, and she has not scheduled a meeting as of yet. The Commission also talked about planning school vi sits to encourage children to read. IX. NEW BUSINESS A. 2020 Library Commission Meeting Schedule Commissioner Reddy motioned; seconded by Commissioner Whitney to have five meetings in 2020. They will meet on February 12, April 8, June 10, September 9 and November 18 (November 11 falls on Veteran’s Day). Motion carried with a vote of 5-0-0. The Commission will go “Dark” on January 8, March 11, May 13, July 8, August 12, October 14 and December 18, 2020. X. LIBRARY REPORTS A. Report from Nancy Howe, County Librarian Deputy County Librarian Chris Brown presented the monthly report, which was included in the Agenda Packet, for Nancy Howe. B. Report from Lani Yoshimura, Gilroy Librarian Lani gave her monthly report on the Gilroy Library, which was also included in the Agenda Packet. XI. COMMISSION COMMENTS None. XII. STAFF COMMENTS Commissioner Reddy's term will expire in December. Commission applications can be found on the City of Gilroy website. Page 3 of 3 XIII. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Election of 2020 Officers will be on the February 12, 2020 Agenda. XIV.
