Hello -
I am writing to contribute a public comment in regards to item 10.1 on tonight's agenda, the school
resource officer memorandum of understanding for fiscal year 2024-2025. I am a parent of two students
at Luigi Aprea Elementary School in grades five and two, and would like to urge the Council to approve
the two School Resource Officers (SROs) for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. These two officers have already
proved invaluable in their role in thwarting the plans of Gilroy resident Markus Beck last month in
detonating his residence, and it goes without saying that both should continue to serve our school
community for the coming year.
I would also like to encourage the City Council, in light of this incident and the severe lack of safety and
security measures that have been highlighted as a result, to consider an additional one to two SROs in
the 2024-2025 or 2025-2026 fiscal years. GUSD has fourteen school sites, a large service area and a
very diverse community: we need to ensure that children and staff at all school sites are safe and it is
clear that SROs are a key component in ensuring their safety.
We understand that SROs are "expensive," that has been relayed to us as parents on numerous
occasions since the incident at Luigi Aprea when we have asked if having more of them is a possibility. In
light of this near miss at Luigi Aprea last month, there should be no question, however, that this is
something to which funds can and should be diverted: there is nothing more important than the safety of
all GUSD students and staff at their school sites and two officers simply is not enough to cover the
service area.
I encourage the City Council, in partnership with GUSD, to seriously consider increasing the number of
SROs; it is unlikely that we as parents of students in GUSD are going to feel safe sending our children to
school unless this important step is taken.
