Hello, My name is Mimi Dougherty and I am a board member of the Morgan Hill Pickleball Club as well as Tournament Director. I am writing in response to the 4 courts planned in Los Animas Park. If you want to run tournaments and clinics and recoup some of your money on the courts, 4 courts is not enough . 4 courts would be the minimum to satisfy current recreational demands. However, a minimum of 6, better 7 courts is necessary to run a tournament or host classes and clinics. While the 4 courts are used for recreational pickleball, the 3 other courts in Morgan Hill (overlays on the basketball courts) are often used for classes, clinics, and overflow. If the overlay courts were refinished we could definitely use them everyday for pickleball. So I would recommend really a minimum of 7 courts. 4 for recreational, 3 for classes/clinics and all the courts for tournaments. Even 7 courts is not enough for all the brackets so we have to run them over 3 days rather than a single day. The money we make from the tournaments goes back to the club which is under the city. And the city of MH is using some of the funds to fund lighting, nets, shed, and balls for the club. Unless you have adequate courts you won’t be able to recoup your expenses or run tournaments , clinics and classes. With the mayors vision to make this a pickleball destination, 4 courts will fall short. With a $900,000 budget you can easily put in more courts than 4. Make a wise decision now rather than regret later. Sincerely, Mimi Dougherty Morgan Hill Pickleball Club Board Member Morgan Hill Pickleball Club Tournament Director Sent from my iPhone
