As a long time resident of Gilroy, I am concerned about the proposed ordinance to allow
electronic billboards along Highway 101. After reviewing the brightness survey that was
prepared for the City last month, I still have three concerns: 1) Multiple studies have found
that digital billboards can distract drivers, which increases the risk of accidents, particularly in
a "trafficky" environment (like Highway 101 through Gilroy at certain times). 2) Electronic
billboards alter the aesthetic of the area and add to light pollution. This is especially relevant
for residents like me who value dark skies for star-gazing and astronomy. 3) When an
ordinance like this is approved, it sets a precedent, which could open the door to more digital
signage applications in the future.
