Hello City Leaders,
Since I am not able to attend tonight’s city council meeting, I am sending my public comment via email…
I’m writing to respectfully request updates, clarity on ownership, and anticipated timelines related to several items
discussed, particularly those impacting the Las Animas area.
Traffic Safety Study – Las Animas
We understand a traffic safety study is currently underway near Las Animas. Could you please share:
• Where the City is in that process
• An anticipated completion timeframe
• When results and recommendations might be shared with the community
Intersection & Infrastructure Improvements
I’d also appreciate updates on:
• The status of evaluating upgrading the Charles Lux & Lopez intersection from a two-way stop to a four-
way stop
• Adding school zone signage and/or painted roadway warnings on Charles Lux and other approaches to
school zones to alert drivers and reduce speed
• The process and approval timeline for clearly marked crosswalks and pedestrian beacon lights, starting at
Las Animas and eventually expanding to other GUSD school zones
Formal Crossing Guard Program
We are still seeking clarity on:
• Who is responsible for establishing a formal crossing guard program (City, District, GPD, or jointly)
• Whether the model would include paid staff, volunteers, or a hybrid
• A realistic timeline for a decision and pilot implementation, ideally beginning at Las Animas
I’ve had some parents ask how they can help, but before coordinating additional volunteers, it’s important that a
formal, trained, and approved structure is in place.
After School Dismissal Safety
It has also been brought to my attention that after school dismissal at Las Animas can be particularly chaotic, with
congestion and illegal parking creating unsafe conditions. I’d like to ask whether GPD presence during dismissal
could be increased in the near term while longer-term solutions are developed.
In the meantime, I will continue supporting the corner where the accident occurred as a volunteer crossing guard as I
am able. I do have some pre planned travel coming up, which reinforces the need for a more sustainable and formal
solution sooner rather than later.
I understand that some improvements take time, but I remain hopeful that near term actions such as a pilot crossing
guard program, safety assemblies, and targeted enforcement can move forward with urgency while broader
infrastructure changes are studied.
Thank you again for your leadership, time, and continued engagement. I appreciate any updates you’re able to
provide.
Thank you,
Cindy Nuñez
