Subject:EXTERNAL - Follow-Up: School Zone Signage & Crossing Guard Program – Charles Lux / Lopez
Date:Tuesday, March 3, 2026 9:45:20 AM
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Thank you again for allowing me to provide public comment regarding pedestrian safety near
Charles Lux and Lopez.
I am writing to follow up on the request for an immediate interim school area warning sign at
this location while the traffic safety study is being completed. The collision occurred within
500 feet of the school, and there is currently no signage on the approach from 10th Street onto
Charles Lux alerting drivers that they are entering a school zone.
The California MUTCD (Part 7 – Traffic Controls for School Areas) recommends school
warning signage within this distance of a school. Additionally, California Vehicle Code §
22358.4 makes it clear that reduced school speed limits must be properly posted to be
enforceable. Without appropriate signage, speed enforcement becomes difficult, if not
impossible and accountability is limited.
Given that this is recommended state guidance, I respectfully ask: what would prevent the
City from installing compliant school area warning signs not only at this location, but at all
approaches within 500 feet of schools throughout Gilroy? Ensuring consistent signage
citywide would support enforcement, improve driver awareness, and help ensure alignment
with state safety recommendations.
While I am requesting at minimum that a sign be installed immediately at Charles Lux and
Lopez, I also encourage the City to evaluate signage at all school approaches to ensure Gilroy
is proactively meeting recommended guidelines. Could you please advise on the timeline for
installing a compliant school area warning sign at this location and whether a broader
review of school-zone signage citywide is being considered?
I would also like to follow up on the formal crossing guard program being piloted at Las
Animas. I am eager to support this effort and would appreciate guidance on how to get started,
including a designated point person within the City who can help coordinate next steps.
Thank you for your time, your leadership, and your continued commitment to pedestrian
safety in our community.
Respectfully,
Cindy Nuñez
