HomeMy WebLinkAbout05 04 2026 - Item 8.2 - Maria Aguilar1 Stefan Mercer From:Maria Aguilar <md12aguilar@yahoo.com> Sent:Wednesday, April 29, 2026 11:08 PM To:All Council Members; Public Comments Subject:EXTERNAL - Camp Hope Follow Up Flag:Follow up Flag Status:Flagged A few years back this city passed a no camping ordinance, you're all aware of the particulars as well as the fact that except for two employed quality of life officers (who move folks along) and a garbage truck. this city hasn't implemented any other assistance or programs to address the largest per capita unhoused population. Thankfully, folks like Jan Bernstein and other local organizations have assisted individuals/ families and have been instrumental in finding housing in San Jose for about 200 individuals, otherwise, the number of unhoused in our community would have continued to explode. I'm optimistic that the majority of city council members unanimously voted for the ad hoc Subcommittee to work with Destination Home as well as others in our community to brainstorm a complex societal issue and try to come up with solutions. The unhoused affects all of us in our community, it's probably the number one issue that draws the most complaints at city council meetings. If you are serious about exploring solutions I urge you to take a step back, change the ordinance to allow this one encampment with review dates for compliance. Until this city comes up with actual plans to address our unhoused, dismantling of Camp Hope is premature.
