Subject:EXTERNAL - Resolution Against ICE Facility in Gilroy
RE: Resolution Against ICE Facility in Gilroy
Dear City Council:
As a 20-year resident of Santa Clara County, I want to express my support for the
proposed resolution to oppose a possible ICE detention facility in Gilroy , and also
support prohibiting ICE or DHS from using city property for civil immigration enforcement .
The means and methods used by ICE in cities such as Los Angeles and Minneapolis, as well as other
jurisdictions, have caused irreparable harm to the residents and quality of life in those areas; and the
indiscriminate targeting of those with valid visas, work permits, or indeed the targeting of US citizens,
should never be tolerated.
Studies have confirmed the easily observable: ICE presence and ICE detentions increase in areas
with detention facilities. The detention facility nearest to Gilroy is in or near Bakersfield, California.
The remoteness of that facility has spared the bay area from the worst of the terror that has been
visited on Los Angeles or Minneapolis. The cruelty and haphazard enforcement that these facilities
bring with them is ample reason for every right-thinking citizen to oppose every one of them, at every
opportunity.
As regards ICE operational staging: please do fact-finding with regard to any and all City land,
services, and other resources (personnel etc) that may be used currently or in the future to facilitate
immigration enforcement. We need to know – through an investigation and taking inventory – what
these resources are so that you as City Council can ensure they are not co-opted by immigration
agencies. If any resources are identified as facilitating immigration operations, the City Council must
implement measures, amend its budgeting, contracting, permitting, and procurement procedures to
ensure that City services and resources are not used to support the operation of federal immigration
detention.
I greatly appreciate your courage and leadership in the local area. Thank you for publicly taking a
stand on this matter, and for prioritizing the safety and constitutional rights of our people.
Sincerely,
Victor P. Schrader
