Subject:EXTERNAL - Agenda Item 7.9 - Support
Dear Mayor, Vice Mayor, and City Councilmembers,
I am a member of Blue Turn Indivisible and a Rapid Responder member, and I wanted to write to you to
SUPPORT your proposed resolution. Opposing the possible ICE detention facility in Gilroy is the most
important thing we can do right now.
I'd also like you to put a “No staging” policy on the agenda for June 15 to provide concrete protections for the
community by prohibiting the use of city property for civil immigration enforcement.
Having an ICE Detention Center right in the Bay Area will be a source of shame and sadness for our entire
community. Instead of being known for the Garlic Festival and the garlic capital of the world (which I know
Gilroy has worked hard to create), Gilroy will be known as the site of the Bay Area Detention Center.
What out community needs more than anything right now is the City Council and City administration to STEP
UP. You need to create real protections that will be strong enough to oppose this facility. We cannot let our
families be torn apart. We cannot let this kind of suffering exist here.
I also mentioned that I'd like you to agendize a “No-Staging” policy for June 15... I really do not think we should
have any City-owned or City-controlled property, such as public parks, public school grounds, and public
parking lots, to be suddenly awash with immigration enforcement activity. People will be afraid to visit the
things that Gilroy has built for them. And instead, a reign of cold dark terror will fall over the city of Gilroy as
community members avoid public places and shiver at home in fear. And businesses will suffer too, as people
stop going out and using them.
Gilroy is built up of immigrants and farmworker communities. If we let an ICE concentration camp be built here,
we'll regret it forever. They can be stopped and let's be the one to stop them!
Thank you,
Morgen, Blue Turn Indivisible
