An ICE facility and increased enforcement is bad for business and harms our community! We would like to ask you to use this occasion to: a) Commit to participating in litigation so that Gilroy is ready to join Amicus briefs when they are ready. We need to move quickly to challenge this unlawful development. b) Introduce a related policy that will provide concrete protections for the community - “No staging” or "No enforcement” policies prohibit the use of city property for civil immigration enforcement to protect the safety and well-being of community members and City employees. Essentially, city property should be used for city purposes. We hope Gilroy will join Campbell, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose, Santa Clara County, and VTA and other jurisdictions outlined below to adopt this policy right away. Gilroy can move quickly - just as other cities have - by using the policies from the County and Cities of San Jose and Santa Clara as models. (see below) These policies were developed with thorough review by County Counsel and the San Jose City Attorney. Gilroy will benefit from this earlier work, and City Council and Gilroy administrative leaders can be assured that the policy has solid legal standing and minimizes risk. We would like to support this process. Our county-wide, cross-sector Immigrant Protection & Empowerment Network (IPEN) worked with the County BOS and City Councils in San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Campbell and the VTA Board on their policies (see below). We are also working with Mountain View right now and our goal is to have consistent policies across the county and region to provide strong protections for the community, including Gilroy. Thank you very much for your consideration and leadership for the community.
