Subject:EXTERNAL - Public comment on agenda item 10.1 for June 1st council meeting
Dear Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing today in support of keeping the Hanna and Wayland lots closed. I have lived on Arnold Dr. near
the Wayland lot for 15 years, and I have seen first-hand the positive effects that having the parking lots closed
has had on the community. The crime and illegal activity that plagued the park and parking lots has ceased
and the neighborhood has been safer and more peaceful. Please keep our community and city safe by voting
to keep the lots closed (alternative #4 in re-opening staff report). I believe it is a bad idea to open the lots and
jeopardize the safety and well-being of the neighborhood and city because some wish to have more
convenient parking options. I offer the following reasons for keeping the lots closed.
Keeps the City of Gilroy and community safer and eliminates the types of illegal activity outlined in the
re-opening staff report (4th bullet point, 2 nd page).
Both lots are in need of repair and costly ADA upgrades and the City shouldn't rush to open them when
there are ADA compliant issues that need addressing. Based on the staff report, the City of Gilroy
currently does not have money allocated for these repairs.
City of Gilroy departments do not have the wherewithal and resources to manage the
locking/unlocking of the gates based on comments in the staff report.
The push to have the lots opened (as written in the FAIR memo) is only to serve a small group Tennis
players who desire better parking options. It does not honor or consider the concerns of the
community and neighborhood at large. The FAIR Memo offers a biased and narrow-minded
perspective, written only to serve a specific group of people and not the community as a whole.
Almost 130 community members have signed a petition in favor of keeping the Hanna and Wayland
lots closed.
If it is decided that the gates will be re-opened, I believe the City of Gilroy should provide a specific plan to the
community before the gates are re-opened that addresses the gate locking/unlocking procedures, lot
management logistics, law and ordinance enforcement of the lots and general safety concerns of the
neighborhood.
I hope you will consider what I have offered and vote to keep the Hanna and Wayland lots closed.
Thank you for your service to our community.
Sincerely,
