First Street, Suite 101 San Jose, CA 95112 (408) 998-2070 or (510) 777-7703 (510) 383-9613 Fax Good evening, Council Members, My name is Carol McEwan, I am the union representative for AFSCME, Council 57. I represent approximately 106 employees at the City of Gilroy. I have done so for ten years now. I am a member of this community. I have lived in Gilroy for over twenty-five years, I shop here, my kids have gone to school here and we have used many city services and opportunities. I see you in the grocery stores, Costco and at church. I am proud of the changes the council has made to move the city forward, but now the employees who have implemented those changes need to be recognized and compensated. We have worked collaboratively with City negotiators. I am asking for that to continue, and for you to authorize meaningful increases for our membership. Our membership has worked on this negotiation session to try and meet the needs of both the City/community and union members. We understand the reality of the budget, but also the need for our members to earn a living wage. We support our brothers and sisters in police and fire, but we have waited over ten years for our “turn.” We have been told by past administration that this bargaining would be our “turn.” I truly hope that you can help both negotiation teams to reach that goal and res pectfully ask that you look at what we are asking for through our eyes. In unity, Carol McEwan Community member and Union Representative
