Good evening,
I am a concerned resident in Gilroy. I urge you to please add an agenda item to the city council meeƟng agenda and vote
to ban all future data and baƩery storage faciliƟes being built in our community. Data centers and baƩery storage
faciliƟes would potenƟally produce harmful air polluƟon, pollute water, decrease water supply, increase light polluƟon,
and create a 24/7 humming sound that negaƟvely impacts residents’ health.
The baƩery storage facility fire at Moss Landing in Monterey County is a relevant local example of why this is of high
concern to Gilroy residents. The storage facility there conƟnued reigniƟng, chemicals were found in the soil and
watershed, and the EPA has been involved in cleaning it up over the past year. When the baƩery fire in Moss Landing
happened, residents and students reported that their mouths felt like they had a chemical taste in them and many
people reported respiratory symptoms, or increased symptoms for those with underlying respiratory condi Ɵons. I
encourage you to look on the Monterey Coast Weekly website and to read the ongoing arƟcles about the event, the
effects, and the EPA’s cleanup procedures for that site. Do we want that here?
Although the state has passed legislaƟve changes about the manner in which baƩeries must be stored moving forward,
there is considerable risk involved.
Choose Gilroy over corporaƟons. Choose our children, elderly, and those with chronic health respiratory issues over
profit. Choose to value the environment in which we reside. Currently, the risk outweighs any potenƟal benefits.
Respecƞully,
Jody Rae Lasda
