Subject:EXTERNAL - Pickleball Courts for the City of Gilroy
Dear Mayor and Members of the Gilroy City Council,
My name is Guy Moy, and I serve as a USA Pickleball Ambassador. I have been
following with great interest the positive progress the City of Gilroy has been making to
bring pickleball to your community.
As many cities have discovered, developing pickleball facilities is not an easy
undertaking. The challenges of finding suitable locations, balancing budgets, and meeting
growing community demand can be significant, especially in these difficult financial
times. However, communities that have made the investment are seeing tremendous
returns.
Much of my advocacy work has been in Fremont, California. Through a collaborative
effort between the pickleball community and city leadership, Fremont has grown from
just three makeshift multi-purpose pickleball courts to sixteen dedicated courts that now
serve more than 800 active players.
Looking back, our city leaders recognize that investing in pickleball was an investment in
the community itself. The courts are used daily by residents of all ages and skill levels.
Pickleball has become far more than a recreational activity—it has become a source of
exercise, social connection, mental well-being, and community engagement.
The benefits extend beyond recreation. Dedicated pickleball facilities attract tournaments,
visitors, and local spending at restaurants, hotels, and businesses. They create
opportunities for youth programs, senior activities, and intergenerational participation.
Few recreational amenities can serve such a broad segment of the population while
promoting healthy and active lifestyles.

I understand that the bids for the proposed pickleball courts have exceeded the original
budget. While this presents a difficult decision, I respectfully encourage the City Council
to view this project not as an expense, but as a long-term investment in the health and
quality of life of Gilroy residents.
The demand for pickleball continues to grow throughout California and across the nation.
Communities that have invested in dedicated facilities are finding that their courts
quickly become some of the most heavily used recreational amenities in their park
systems.
Gilroy has an opportunity to create a lasting community asset that will benefit residents
for decades to come. I respectfully urge you to consider providing the additional funding
necessary to move this project forward and make this vision a reality.
Thank you for your time, your leadership, and your commitment to enhancing
recreational opportunities for the residents of Gilroy.
Respectfully,
Guy Moy
