Subject:EXTERNAL - Agenda Item 8.12 on the July 27,2026 of Gilroy City Council Meeting -
Approval of Poilicyon Public Comment and Meeting Decorum During City Council
Meetings
In my 40+ years of living here in Gilry and attending any number of City Council Meetings there has NEVER been
seen or attempted by City Council to silence the reaction of citizens in the audience.
Audience reaction is allowed under the 1st Amendment of the Constitution as long as it does not actually disrupt
the proceedings. Nor can government rule to silence folks just because it does not like or agree with the
audience’s participation.
There was never any actual disruption at the June 15, 2026 Council Meeting from which I believe this proposed
policy stems.
I request that this proposed policy be not only withdrawn from the meeting calendar, but that it be permanently
dropped.
Tolerance, rather than a sstep toward the fascism of suppression should be what guides our behavior.
Sincerely,
Mary Yates
