This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council is
called to order by His HonorSig Sanchez.
Present: Councilmen Carl W. Pate, Courtland M. Rush, Charles
Gallo, Everett C. Wentworth and Wilford E. Jordan. Absent:
Councilman KTenneth L. Petersen.
Councilman Kenneth L. Petersen takes his seat at the Council
table during the reading of the correspondence.
A notice of a meeting of the South Santa Clara Valley Sewer
and Industrial Wastes Association, to be held on July 24th is
read. Max Kludt, Director of Public Works, and Walter Hanna Sr.
will represent Gilroy at this meeting.
A letter from Gilroy Union High School District is read
offering to remove the lighting fixtures at the gymkhana grounds.
No action is taken.

A request from the Mayor of the City of Bakersfield for the
adoption of a resolution to be forwarded to the League of California
Cities regarding distribution of Federal Urban Highway Funds to
Cities is read. The request is referred to the Street and Ordinance
Committees and the City Engineer for study and recommendation.
A request from Reverend H. K. Passmore of the Bethany Temple
for a Use Permit to build a church on the corner of 8th arid Dowdy
Streets is read and referred to the Planning Commission.
A letter from Mr~. W. B. Prentice of Kerman, California, con-
gratulating the community on having an organization such as the
Rascals Car Club is read. The letter is ordered filed 3nd the City
Clerk is instructed to write the Rascals Car Club commending them
for their courtesy on the highway.
A letter from Governor Goodwin J. Knight of the State of Calif-
ornia is read regarding the readiness of civil defense and disaster
organizations in the Ci~y. Director of Civil Defense, Cecil Reinsch,
is instructed to take action on this matter.
Bids for equipment rental from Renz Construction Co. and Wm.
Radtke & Son are read by the City Clerk. The bids are referred to
the Director of Public Works to determine low bidder. Motion by
Councilman Pate, second by Councilman Jordan and carried that the
Director of Public Works be authorized to determine the lowest bid-
der.
The proposed budget and tax rate for the fiscal year 1958-1959
is presented by Councilman Pate. Members of the Library Board, Mrs.
Jack Ronald and Mr. Armand vVhite, are present. Mr. White states
that the money alloted for the Library Fund is not sufficient and
he requests at least $2,000.00. Councilman Pate assures him that
this matter will be considered at the August 4th meeting of the
Council.
Councilman Pate states that no change in the tax rate will be
necessary. Both he and the Mayor commend the City Clerk and his office
personnel for their work on the budget.
Application for an On Sale General liquor license from Henry &
Rose Kong and Henry & Yvonne White d.b.a. Gilroy Bowl, 154 N. Monte-
rey Street is presented and read. No objection is made.
The report from the County Health Department on water samples
is accepted.
The Director of Public Works reports on the landscaping taking
place in front of the city offices.
The plans and specifications for Miller Park are presented by
the Director of Public Works. He states that the Pieters-Wheeler
Seed Co. will furnish the seed at their cost. The plans and speci-
fications are referred to the Building and Grounds Committee for
approval.
The City Engineer discussed the disposal of cannery and indus-
trial wastes.
The City Attorney presents a letter from the County Councils'
Office notifying the Council that the city's electrolier system has
been removed from the tax rolls. He states that the electroliers
were taxed while owned by the P.G.&E. Co.
The City Attorney states that representatives from the League
of California Cities will meet with the Council to explain the var-
ious types of charter if requested. A meeting of members of the
Common Council and the City Attorney is arranged for August 19th
for an informal discussion on the Charter.
The Mayor announces a proposed meeting with De Leuue-Cather
consultants on August 11th to discuss the West Side Freeway.
Councilman Petersen presents and discusses the City of Santa
Clara charter.
Motion by Councilman Pate, second by Councilman Wentworth and
carried that this meeting adjourn.
