This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called
to order by His Honor Mayor Sig Sanchez.
Present: Councilmen Carl W. Pate, Courtland M. Rush, Kenneth
L. Petersen, Everett C. Wentworth, Charles Gallo, and Wilford E.
Jordan.
The Mayor now asks if all Councilmen have received copies of
the minutes of the regular monthly meeting of July 7th and the reg-
ular adjourned meeting of July 2Jrd.
All Councilmen answer in the affirmative.
The Mayor now asks if there are any errors or omissions in the
minutes as presented.
No errors or omissions are noted.
The Mayor now declares the minutes of the regular monthly
meeting of July 7th and the regular adjourned meeting of July 23,
1958 approved.
A letter from Max Kludt, Secretary of the Planning Commission,
is read giving notice of a hearing for a use permit for a church
and recommending the realignment of Welburn Avenue and the construc-
tion of a bridge across Miller Slough. This matter is referred to
the Street Committee and the Director of Public Works.
A letter from the City Manager of Bakersfield is read regarding
a resolution on allocation of Federal Aid Funds to cities for street
purposes rcg~~ding ~ rooolution on 3110o~tion of Fod8r31 ~id Fuads
to citioo for otre8t purpos8s. Councilman Pate recommends that
this matter be tabled until further information is obtained from
the League of California Cities.
A card from T. M. Youngs of Santa Paula is read expressing
appreciation for the park on N. Monterey Street. Councilmen Gallo
and Petersen recommend that two more tables be placed in the park.
The matter of investigating prices and obtaining the two tables is
placed in'the hands of ,the City Administrator.
The City Clerk announces a meeting on the De Leuw Cather Re-
port at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, in San Jose on August
14th. The City Clerk is instructed to call all the Councilmen to
remind them of the meeting.
A letter from Mr. Robert A. Mason, County Communications
Officer, submitting a revised agreement for Communications Ser-
vice, is read. This matter is tabled until the August 7th luncheon
with Mr. Gunn of the County Executive offices.
A letter from Mrs. Alex Balanesi is read requesting use of
Wheeler Auditorium on October 25th for a Fashion Show to be given
by the Agriculture Extension Service. Motion by Councilman Peter-
sen second by Councilman W~ntworth and carried that the Agriculture
Extension Service be granted permission to use the Wheeler Auditorium
free of charge on October 25th.
Max Kludt asks for authorization to advertise for bids on the
sprinkler system and lawn at Miller Park. Motion by Councilman
Petersen second by Councilman Pate and carried that the Director
of Public Works advertise for bids on the sprinkler system and lawn
at Miller Park.
Max Kludt asks for authorization from the Council to advertise
for bids for street maintenance work. Motion by Councilman Pate
second by Councilman Wentworth and carried that the Director of
Public Works advertise for bids for street maintenance work.
Mac Kludt presents a request for permits from L. G. Edwards
and Standard Oil to erect signs on property belonging to others.
Motion by Councilman Rush second by Councilman Pate and carried that
the request for a permit be granted to L. G. Edwards of the Pacheco
Pass Motel to erect an electric sign on a building belonging to
John Ciabitarri located at 63 South Monterey Street. Motion by
Councilman Wentworth second by Councilman Gallo that the Electrical
Products Corp. be granted permission to erect an electric sign for
Standard Oil Company on the east wall of a building located at 40
Old Gilroy Street.
The City Clerk reads a report of the City Treasurer asking
for advice from the Council on extending the agreement with local
banks for money now on time deposit and the investment of additional
money. Motion by Councilman Pate second by Councilman Rush and
carried that this matter be referred to the Finance Committee,
Treasurer, and City Administrator for investigation of the place-
ment of money on time deposit in local banks and investment of

additional funds.
The City Attorney presents and reads Ordinance No. 575. Motion
by Councilman Rush second by Councilman Pate that OrdinBnce No. 575
be adopted.

ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY FIXING AMOUNT
OF REVENUE FROM PROPERTY TAXES NECESSARY TO SUPPORT ITS DEPARTMENTS
FOR THE CURRENT YEAR, 1959-1959, AND TO PAY THE BONDED AND OTHER
INDEBTEDNESS OF THE CITY.

1958, by the following vote:

Motion by Councilman Pate second by Councilman Rush>and carried that
the tax rate for 1958-59 be set at ~1.50 for the old City limits and
$1.49 for any new additions within the city after 1940 and that the
1959-59 budget be adopted as presented.
Councilman Wentworth asks the Councilmen if they have any ob-
jection to him bidding on the repairing of the levee at the Sewer
Farm. All Councilmen have no objections as the City will not be in-
volved in this matter.
Councilman Rush asks the Council,to be thinking about hiring of
a full time maintenance man for the City's equipment.
Councilman Pate reports the tree had been removed at the corner
of 6th & Eigleberry Streets near the Lawrence Osborn property and
that the sidewalk was repaired.
Councilman Pate reads a letter from Stubnitz-Greene CorD. stat-
ing that they were calling for bid for the erection of their'building.
Councilman Pate instructs the City Administrator to ~o to Stock-
ton to investigate their license ordinance and bring back informa-
tion to the Finance and Ordinance Committees.
W. J. Hanna Jr. states that he would like to study the water
agreement with the Water Conservation District. It is decided that
the Water Committee will meet with the City Engineer at his conven-
ience.
The Mayor reports on a meeting a week ago with Mr. Evans, Arch-
itect from the University of California, who stated that the deci-
sion of whether the City of Gilroy would get the University site
would be sometime in October.
The City Attorney presents and reads Ordinance No. 576. Motion
by Councilman Pate second by Councilman Jordan that Ordinance No.
576 be adopted.

AN ORDINANCE DECLARING THE INTENTION OF THE CO~TI~ON COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF GILROY TO VACATE FOREST STREET, BErNEEN IOOF AVENUE AND
SWANSTON LANE.
ADOPTED AND PASSED this 4th day of August, 1958, by the following
vote:

The time of the hearing is set for September 2, 1958.
Reports of the Police Department, Building Inspector and City ~
Officers are presented and read. Motion by Councilman Rush second ~
by Councilman Petersen that these reports be accepted as read. --
Reports on water samples taken by the Santa Clara County '1ealth
Department on July 17th are read. These reports are satisfactorily
and are ordered filed.
The City Clerk is instructed to write Mr. L. F. Richards to
find out the swimming pool is completed to meet with the specifica-
tions and to see that the final payment is made to Mr. Quartiroli,
the contractor.
Motion by Councilman Pate second by Councilman Wentworth that
bills as presented be allowed and warrants drawn on the Treasurer.
Councilman Petersen reports on the off-street parking situation.

Discussion is had on the matter of parking meters. No action is
taken.
Motion by Councilman Pate second by Councilman Wentworth
and carried that this meeting be adjourned to Monday, August 18,
1958, at 8'oclock p.m., in the Council Chambers, ~fueeler Auditorium,
Gilroy, California.
