March 10, 2015 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:34 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY'S REPORT Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Bruce Morasca, Alma Perez, Nicole Robinson, Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang Arts & Culture Commissioners Absent: Sally Armendariz Christopher High School Student Representative Silva was also absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the minutes of the January 13, 2015 regular meeting. Vice Chair Robinson seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-1 vote (Commissioner Armendariz was absent). APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the agenda for February 10, 2015, with stated change of order. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-1 vote (Commissioner Armendariz was absent). None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on Movie Night in Collaboration with the Public Art Committee and Gilroy Arts Alliance Commissioner Morasca reported that he has mentioned the collaboration to all three (3) groups. Sub -Committee meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14a' at 5:00 p.m. in Council Chambers. B. Fundraising for 2014 & 2015 for Art & Business Partnership Award Staff suggested that in lieu of the Awards they have given in the past, they could give out nice Certificates that wouldn't be costly. C. Annual Arts Roundtable There was discussion one possible topics: grant writing; invite a couple of City Council representatives — Roland Velasco as one) and City Managers from Morgan Hill, Hollister and find out how they created policy for their Arts; and invite the Arts groups. A Sub -Committee will need to be formed_ D, Changing of the Cultural District Cathy Mirelez reported that Community Development Planning Manager Susan Martin will be attending the April 14, 2015 Arts & Culture Commission meeting to discuss this agenda item in greater detail. Therefore, item was tabled until April 14th. E. Selection of a Sub -Committee for Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan This will be discussed at the meeting on April 14, 2015. NEW BUSINESS A. Interviewing of Public Art Committee Applicants No applicants; therefore no interviews. B. Annual Report of City of Gilroy Museum Gilroy Historical Society President Connie Rogers presented the Museum's annual report to the Commission. (See attached PowerPoint). Chair Scariot thanked Ms. Rogers for a wonderful presentation and all the hard work that she and the volunteers do- C. Question and Answer Session Re: the General Plan City of Gilroy Senior Planner (General Plan Project Manager) gave a copy of the most current Gilroy General Plan Newsletter to each of the Commissioners. He then reviewed the Gilroy General Plan Process. Questions followed. Mr. Ketchum suggested that the Commission prepare a presentation, attend a GPAC meeting and present it. Commissioner Bottini will let the Commission know which meeting would be best suited for them to attend. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported the following: Library Mural — PAC will review the applications and choose the artist they want to make a presentation. Then the PAC and ACC will meet jointly (but vote separately, that night) and send recommendation to City Council. PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Chair Scariot reported that the group has 4 panels designed. Each panel is going to be sponsored by a business. It is a great deal of work. Chair Scariot stated that she developed a Gilroy Historic Paseo Project page on Facebook. She asked that the Commissioners go on Facebook and "like" the page. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Bottini walked the Commissioners through the brochure that was given out earlier by Stan Ketchum. GILROY ARTS ALLLANCE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported the following: ➢ Feb -March — Black history month with exhibits of local artists ➢ K — 12 Youth Art Exhibit — March 28 tbru May 3 — Entry forms can be picked up at the Art Center. Prizes will be given out (really nice ones). STAFF REPORT Cathy Mirelez reported: A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events ➢ The Spring Children's Theater production of Peter Pan, Jr opens at the Gilroy High School Theater on Thursday, April 2nd, and runs through Sunday, April 12th (no Shows on Easter Sunday). Tickets are $9.00 each and can be purchased at Theater Box Office window. ➢ 2 adult artists (Elissa Nesheim and Jerri Kuehn) will be exhibiting their art pieces in the Gilroy City Hall "gallery" space the months of March & April. Look for an announcement to appear in the Gilroy Dispatch. B. Museum Prcjects/Tours/Displays Update was given by Gilroy Historical Society President Connie Rogers earlier this evening STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS None. STAFF COMMENTS None_ ADJOURNMENT Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:52 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.
