November 10, 2015 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY'S REPORT Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Sally Armendariz (5:44 p.m.), Barbara Bottini, Janette Contreras, Bruce Morasca, Alma Perez, Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang The CHS Student Representative, Jacob Yoder -Schrock was absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the minutes of the October 13, 2015, regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Wang. The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-1 vote (Commissioner Armendariz was absent). APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the agenda for November 10, 2015. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-1 vote (Commissioner Armendariz was absent). None. AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Sub -Committee Report on Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan The last GPAC meeting was on October 28, 2015. The document now goes to the Planning Commission and Vice Chair Morasca said that was an opportunity to attend and voice the Arts concerns. B. Wrap-up Discussion on Annual Presentation to City Council Chair Scariot said she thought it went well. But she was concerned that there were only two (2) Commissioners besides her that were at the City Council meeting. She stressed how important it is for Council to see all of the Commission present. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion on Possible Purchase of the Book "Revitalizing with Arts & Culture" Chair Scariot and Cathy Mirelez explained that Stan Ketchum recommended this book to the Commission. Ms. Mirelez will bring more information about the book to the January 2016 meeting. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported that the following was discussed at the October meeting: ➢ Unveiling Ceremony for the Library Mural — Thursday, October 29 at 4:30 p.m. — went very well; good attendance (approximately 40 people) ➢ Project List for the Planning Department was discussed —Chair Scariot suggested that the white wall at the Gilroy Arts Alliance would be a great place for a mural PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Chair Scariot reported that the Commemorative bricks are still for sale at $250 each. She said that businesses have been purchasing them as well. They will be a permanent part of the Pasco. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Bottini reported that the last meeting of GPAC was October 28, 20t5. It now goes to the Planning Committee for review and approval and, finally City Council. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE Commissioner Morasca, reported on the following: Holiday Boutique and Artist Corner all sold something — Saturday, November 7th Limelight Theater — new show Always Patsy Cline opening on November 13 Art Show December 13th — displaying the religious art of Artist Howard Finster Developing Strategic Plan Fundraisers Workshop Gilroy Garlic Festival monies raised for the Commission was $78. And we also raised $425 from manning the Fireworks Booth STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events: An email was sent to Jonathan Souza, Choir Director and April Valenzuela, Theater Director, at Gilroy High School, asking if they might have a student who would be a good fit as the GHS Student Representative to the Commission (Chair Scariot was copied on the email, also), but have not heard back, as of yet. ➢ Young Artists Poster Contest flyers were distributed to all Gilroy schools (both public & private) on Tuesday, October 6th, and staff will be collecting entries from each school on Friday, November 20th (a flyer with details is attached to your Agenda packet). ➢ The 2016 Winter/Spring Recreation Activity Guide will be mailed to local households on Thursday, November 12th. The Audition announcement for our Children's Theater production, G°Disney's Cinderella, Jr." is in full color, and on the inside cover. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: The Arts & Culture Commission is the governing body of the Gilroy Museum, and this coming February or March, the Museum Management Team will be presenting their annual report to the Commission. CHRISTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT None. COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts -Related) Chair Scariot spoke to Melanie Corona of the Downtown Business Association about Movie Night and a possible collaborative effort. Commissioner Contreras — Mystery Theater was very good. CHS had altars in the Library — it was a collaboration of the Spanish classes. Vice Chair Morasca — informed the Commission that Sam and Judy Bozzo are looking into applying for a Gilroy Foundation grant for $2,500 to put on three (3) Movie Nights next summer; Vice Chair Morasca also stated it was nice to see a full Commission present that evening. STAFF COMMENTS Maria De Leon addressed the matter of the Gilroy Arts Alliance (GAA) being discussed throughout the Arts & Culture Commission meetings. She stressed the importance of focusing on the Arts and Culture Commission meeting agenda and encouraged commissioners that whenever possible, and when it was appropriate, to reserve their discussions regarding GAA to the designated GAA section on the agenda. Discussion followed. ADJOURNMENT Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:44 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.
