January 12, 2016 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:34 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY’S REPORT Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Sally Armendariz (5:43 p.m.), Barbara Bottini, Janette Contreras, Alma Perez, and Peter Wang. Bruce Morasca and Mattie Scariot were absent. The CHS Student Representative, Jacob Yoder-Schrock was present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Peter Wang to approve the minutes of the November 10, 2015, regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Janette Contreras. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Morasca and Scariot were absent). APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion was made by Janette Contreras to approve the agenda for January 12, 2016. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Peter Wang. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Morasca and Scariot were absent). INTRODUCTIONS None. AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Sub-Committee Report on Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan The General plan has been submitted to Council and there are no further meetings scheduled. Barbara suggested that the Commission be aware of when this topic will be on the agenda for City Council meetings and that the Commission should make an effort to attend the Council meetings in support of the Arts being included in the General Plan. B. Discussion on Movie Night 2 Tabled to the February meeting. C. Update on Arts & Culture Commission Arts Roundtable Cathy Mirelez informed the Commission that last year there was discussion on the Art Center. In lieu of the Arts & Culture Roundtable it was voted to support the arts community by having a community wide Arts Roundtable. The goal being to obtain feedback on the Arts Center from the Gilroy arts community. Maria told the Commissioners they will be able to invite one person to attend this roundtable with them. Maria will name the Arts & Culture Commission as supporters on the flyer for the event on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 9 a.m. to noon. Maria asked the commissioners to let her know as soon as possible the name and email for the person they would like to invite. Maria stated that she would like to have the Commissioners act as greeters at this Arts Roundtable. Barbara moved that the A & C Commission be listed as supporters on the flyer that Maria is creating for this event. Motion was seconded by Peter Wang. The motion was carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote. (Commissioner Mattie Scariot and Commissioner Bruce Morasca were absent.) NEW BUSINESS A. Election of Chair, Vice Chair and Chair of Public Art Committee and Arts & Culture Commission for 2016. Motion was made by Peter Wang to elect Mattie Scariot as Chair of the Arts & Culture Commission motion was seconded by Sally Armendariz. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioner Bruce Morasca and Commissioner Mattie Scariot were absent). Motion was made by Janette Contreras to elect Bruce Morasca as Vice Chair of the Arts & Culture Commission for 2016. Motion was seconded by Peter Wang. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioner Morasca and Mattie Scariot were absent). Motion was made by Peter Wang to elect Bruce Morasca as Chair of the Public Arts Committee for 2016. Motion was seconded by Barb Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioner Morasca and Mattie Scariot were absent). B. Discussion on Possible Purchase of the Book “Revitalizing with Arts & Culture” 3 City Staff member Stan Ketchum recommended the purchase of this book as an excellent resource for the Arts & Culture Commission. Maria De Leon suggested that the book be purchased and held in the Recreation Department to be checked out by commissioners as needed. Barb Bottini moved to make the purchase and it was seconded by Peter Wang . The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioner Morasca and Mattie Scariot were absent). C. Discussion on Adding an Additional Arts & Culture Commissioner to Public Art Committee Will be announced at the roundtable. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE None. PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Tabled to the February meeting. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE This Committee disbanded after last meeting. This item will be removed from the agenda. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE Tabled to February meeting. STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events: Budget review from Cathy Mirelez. Please see attached budget spreadsheet. Cathy shared a flyer about the auditions for Cinderella our theatre Spring production. Cathy reported that there were 160 entries accepted for the Young Artist Poster Contest. The 17 winners of the contest will be given their prizes and presented to City Council at the February 1, 2016 meeting. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: Dr. Martinez and Ramon Sanchez are working on a display with the theme of Hispanics in Gilroy in the 50’s that will be displayed in the glass case in the main hall of City Hall. Sally asked Cathy for contact information for Dr. Martinez. CHRISTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT 4 Jacob Yoder Schrock shared information and flyers about the production of the Crucible at Christopher High School. The play is being performed during school time as well as evening performances. The Commissioners will be provided with free tickets if they contact Jacob. The next play production will be the Senior play “Appointment with Death”, by Agatha Christie. Maria suggested that she would like it if the students might be able to perform for our seniors at the senior center or for the junior high school students at our after school program. There will also be a talent show and in May a comedy show. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS (Arts-Related) Janette shared that she has been attending many communities event, such as the Disney extravaganza at Gilroy High school. Janette reported that the School district will be preparing a project for Community Safety working with the Police Department. Janette reported that an organization here in Gilroy called Native Daughters of the Golden West is working on a project to help local children with health needs, such as hearing aids, glasses or braces for their teeth. STAFF COMMENTS Maria stated that she is looking forward to the Arts Roundtable. ADJOURNMENT Acting Chair Barbara Bottini adjourned the meeting at 6:43 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020. _________________________________ Sondra Banks, Administrative Secretary City of Gilroy Recreation Department
