MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS and CULTURE COMMISSION
5:30 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:34 p.m. by Chair Mattie Scariot.
SECRETARY’S REPORT
Art & Culture Commissioners Present: Sally Armendariz, Barbara Bottini, Bruce Morasca,
Alma Perez, Mattie Scariot, Janette Contreras and Peter Wang.
Christopher High School Student Representative Jacob Yoder-Schrock was absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the minutes of the January 12, 2016
regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Wang.
The motion carried unanimously with a 7-0-0 vote.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the agenda for the February 9,
2016 meeting and the motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini with the stated
change of order.
The motion carried unanimously with a 7-0-0 vote.
INTRODUCTIONS
Susan Voss introduced Lori Van Meter hired to be a Cultural Arts Recreation Specialist working
under the supervision of Cathy Mirelez.
AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Sub-Committee Report on Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan
This sub-committee no longer exists. This item will be removed from the agenda.
B. Discussion on Movie Night
Judy Bozzo is going to apply for a grant from the Gilroy Foundation for $2000.00
for 3 Movie nights. The Commission will be updated as the grant moves forward.
Whether or not there will concessions for sale will be decided at a later date.

C. Update on Arts & Culture Commission Arts Roundtable
Reminder that it takes place tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m., until noon.
Everyone on the Commission is welcome. Ms. De Leon would like to see all of the
Commissioners at the event as greeters. Ms. De Leon would like the Commissioners to
arrive at about 8:45 a.m.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Interview Prospective Public Art Committee Member
Although Ms. Sanchez was not in attendance, Chair Scariot reported that she is very
energetic and would be an asset to the PAC.
Commissioner Morasca moved to accept Debbi Sanchez and Commissioner Bottini
seconded.
The motion carried unanimously with a 7-0-0 vote.
B. Review of Arts & Culture Commission Budget
$200.00 was given by the Gilroy Foundation to be spent on the Art Roundtable event.
C. Presentation of the book, “Revitalizing with Arts & Culture”
Cathy Mirelez showed the Commissioners the book and reminded them that it will be
available to check out from the Recreation department.
D. Gilroy Museum Annual Report
Tom Howard, a Lead Volunteer at the Museum, gave the Gilroy Museum Annual Report.
Questions followed. The Commission thanked Mr. Howard for his informative report.
E. Gilroy Historical Society’s Recommendation for the Dispersal or Retention of the
Annual Income from the Gilroy Museum Endowment Trust Fund.
Janette Contreras made a motion to transfer the money into the 801 account that Ms.
Rogers is requesting and Sally Armendariz seconded the motion. The Commission
thanked Connie Rogers for the report.
The motion carried unanimously with a 7-0-0 vote.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE – Commissioner Morasca
Bruce Morasca reported that even with the addition of Debbie Sanchez the PAC can still use one
more Committee member.
The Public Art Committee elected Judy Bozzo as Vice Chair of the Public Art Committee.
Sally Armendariz reported that she knows of two people who will apply to be on the PAC.

PASEO PROJECT UPDATE – Commissioner Scariot
This project is well on its way to being completed. There are still more bricks to sell at $250.00
per brick. The Gilroy Foundation has a website where people can purchase the bricks.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE – Commissioner Morasca
Feb 20th – March 20th Black History Month - celebrating women. There will be a cultural event
including dancers and art. Janette Contreras has someone to recommend and will contact Mattie
Scariot.
STAFF REPORT
A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events – Cathy Mirelez
Young Artists Poster Contest “Judges Favorite Award Winners” (17 in total) are on
display in the City Hall Gallery.
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays – Susan Voss
In the City Hall gallery there will be a display of Hispanic life in Gilroy.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS
Not present.
COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts-Related)
Bruce Morasca commented that the website was not updated. Cathy Mirelez will request that
update.
Janette Contreras would like the Commission to acknowledge the Library’s effort to engage
young people through the many programs they offer.
STAFF COMMENTS
Maria De Leon clarified for Sally Armendariz her question regarding the extension of the
deadline to apply to be on a Commission. Ms. Armendariz does not agree that the deadline
should have been extended.
Ms. De Leon spoke to the Commission regarding Peter Wang’s question from the last meeting
about the Mayor’s comments regarding combining the two Commissions having to do with Art.
Ms. De Leon stated that she viewed the video of the particular City Council Meeting which was
referred to by Commissioner Wang, and stated that she did not hear the comment.
ADJOURNMENT
Vice Chair Morasca adjourned the meeting at 7:00 p.m.

FUTURE MEETINGS
The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at
5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, City Hall, 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
CERTIFICATION
I, Theresa Hernandez, do hereby certify that I am the duly appointed and qualified Office
Assistant II, of the Recreation Department for the City of Gilroy, and that on, or before,
Thursday, February 4, 2016 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., the foregoing agenda
was posted at City Hall.
