MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS and CULTURE COMMISSION
5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 8, 2016
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. by Chair Mattie Scariot.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
Art & Culture Commissioners Present: Commissioner Barbara Bottini, Commissioner Janette
Contreras, Commissioner Bruce Morasca, Commissioner Mattie Scariot and Commissioner Peter
Wang.
Art & Culture Commissioners Absent: Commissioner Sally Armendariz (unexcused) and
Christopher High School Student Representative Jacob Yoder -Schrock were both absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Barbara Bottini to approve the minutes of the
February 9, 2016 regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bruce
Morasca.
The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-1 vote (Commissioner Sally Armendariz was
absent).
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion was made by Commissioner Bruce Morasca to approve the agenda for March 8,
2016. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Peter Wang.
The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-1 vote (Commissioner Sally Armendariz was
absent).

AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Movie Nights
Commissioner Bruce Morasca is hoping to be able to do 3 movie nights in conjunction
with the Gilroy Arts Alliance and the Public Arts Committee depending on the grant
received from the Gilroy Foundation. Chair Mattie Scariot stated that regardless of the
amount of the grant she would like to see at least one movie night during the summer.
B. Arts & Culture Commission Presentation to Council on the Arts Roundtable (Feb.
10, 2016)
Chair Mattie Scariot reported that the presentation to City Council went smoothly and
was received positively by the City Council.
A. Acknowledgement of the Gilroy Library's Community Service and Programming
Chair Scariot suggested something simple like a Certificate of Appreciation for their
commitment to the Arts. Commissioner Morasca suggested a Certificate of Recognition
presented to the Library Commission at a future meeting of the Arts & Culture
Commission. Cathy Mirelez asked Commissioner Contreras to send her some narrative
for the certificate. Ms. Mirelez stated that she will put together a certificate and bring it
to the next meeting where the date for presentation can be decided.
B. Review of Arts & Culture Commission Budget to include a reserve for future
Roundtable events and fundraising for sponsored events
Cathy Mirelez shared copies of the budget with the Commissioners. The Commissioners
had some questions and concerns regarding keeping monies available for future Arts
Roundtables and other events. Chair Scariot suggested having further discussion at the
Arts & Culture Commission Retreat.
C. Selection of Date for Annual Commission Retreat
Cathy Mirelez shared that Maria De Leon suggested the possibility of a joint Retreat with
the Public Arts Committee. Chair Scariot stated that she would like to have the Retreat
for the Arts & Culture Commission without the Public Arts Committee. Chair Scariot
would like to have the Retreat on a Saturday for at least 3 hours. Ms. Mirelez asked the
Commissioners to email her the Saturdays that they are free for the next two months.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner Morasca reported that the Public Art Committee did not have a meeting in
February, it was cancelled.
Commissioner Bruce Morasca asked the Commissioners to save the date of Wednesday, March
23, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. to attend a fundraising development training presented by Donna Pray. It
will be held in City Council Chambers.
PASEO PROJECT UPDATE
Commissioner Scariot reported that the City is still waiting for bids.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE
The celebration of Black History Month from Feb. 20th to March 20th has been a great success
thus far. The Gilroy Arts Alliance is always looking for more volunteers especially on the
weekends.
Limelight Theatre is presenting Nunsense from April 1st thru April 23`d, 2016.
STAFF REPORT
A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events
Cathy Mirelez told the Commissioners about a new Water Colorist, Mitzi Shine, who is
currently displaying several of her paintings in City Hall.
Cathy Mirelez reported the Recreation Children's theater production of Cinderella will
be performing at the Gilroy High School Theatre from April 10 thru April 24th.
Cathy Mirelez told the Commissioners that she is working on the Summer Activity
Guide, which will include a new contractor, who will begin teaching Cupcake baking and
decorating this summer.
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays
Susan Voss reported that there will be at least two trainings for Museum Volunteers
and she will let the Commission know the times and dates.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS
None,
COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts -Related)
Commissioner Bruce Morasea reported that the Citizen's Summit was last Friday, March 4,
2016.
Commissioner Barbara Bottini told the Commission that she is very happy to see the Arts
banners hanging up around the City.
STAFF COMMENTS
Cathy Mirelez stated that the Arts & Culture Commission's Annual Retreat should not take place
until after the April Arts & Culture Commission meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Seariot adjourned the meeting at 6:15 p.m.
FUTURE MEETINGS
The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at
5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, City Hall, 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
