April 12, 2016 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. by Vice Chair Morasca. SECRETARY’S REPORT Arts & Culture Commission ers Present: Sally Armendariz (5:36 p.m.) Barbara Bottini, Janette Contreras, Bruce Morasca, Mattie Scariot (5:36 p.m.) and Peter Wang Arts & Culture Commissioners Excused: Arts & Culture Commissioners Absent: Christopher High School Representative Jacob Yoder-Schrock, was also present (5:54 p.m.) APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Wang to approve the minutes of the March 8, 2016 , regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Contreras. The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-0 vote. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the agenda for April 12, 2016 . The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 6-0-0 vote. INTRODUCTIONS None. AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A.Update on Movie Night Vice Chair Morasca reported that the Public Art Committee was not given the Gilroy Foundation grant. Cathy Mirelez reported that there were so many applicants there was not enough money to approve each grant request. 2 Chair Scariot suggested Finding Nemo as the movie for movie night. She also suggested an inexpensive art project for the children to make (a jelly fish in a bottle). Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approv e the movie Finding Nemo and to do the jelly fish in a bottle art project. The GAA short film from the free summer film class will also be shown prior to the main feature. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Contreras . The dates of August 5th or 12th a re the days they are looking at, c ontingent on the approval of the Public Art Committee and the Gilroy Arts Alliance. The motion passed unanimously with a 6-0-0 vote. Cathy has $425 in her budget to go towards renting the movie. The Gilroy Arts Alliance will have to cover publicity again. B.Selection of Presentation Date for Gilroy Library’s Community Service and Programming Recognition The Commission will present this recognition at the regular May meeting. Motion made by Commissioner Morasca to recognize the Gilroy Library for their contribution to the Arts at the regular May 10th meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission. The wording will be “ In recognition of outstanding contributions to the Arts in our community.” The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion passed unanimously with a 6-0-0 vote. C.Selection of Date for Annual Commission Retreat There was much discussion about the day and date for the Retreat. Motion was made by Commissioner Barbara Bottini that the Arts & Culture Commission’s Annual Retreat be held on Wednesday, May 11th from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Willey House (if available) . Motion was seconded by Commissioner Janette Contreras. The motion passed unanimously with a 6-0-0 vote. Karen LaCorte, former Chair of the Arts & Culture Commission, will be the facilitator. NEW BUSINESS None. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE None. PASEO PROJECT UPDATE 3 Chair Scariot reported that the Paseo Committee had a ccepted a bid for producing the panels and they will be ordered soon. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE None. STAFF REPORT A.Cultural Arts Programs/Events: Our Children’s Theater production of “Disney’s Cinderella, Jr.” directed by Carol Romo, opens on Thursday, April 14th at the Gilroy High School Theater and stars 62 young actors between the ages of 6 – 16 years (postcards were circulated) An Art Exhibit featuring the artwork of Gilroy City employees is currently on display in the Gilroy City Hall gallery. The Recreation department is beginning work on the 2016 Fall Activity Guide B.Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: El Excentrico Exhibit open to the public at the Library and Gilroy City Hall (during business hours). Mark McPherson has interviewed and filmed 3 people telling stories about the railroad in Gilroy.   A group of Museum volunteers will be attending atraining in paper conservation techniques.  Other volunteers are participating in online seminar training in Accession & Catalog Management. CHRISTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT - Jacob Yoder-Schrock Reported the choir concert was held at the Presbyterian Church and it was very successful. The school band will have a concert in early May Jacob will advise the Commission when a date is announced. The high school is working on a production of Music Man. The drama program is working with the choir, band and dance programs on th e production. Jacob invit ed everyone to attend. Jacob shared copies of the flyer with the Commission . Jacob also gave the Commission information on how to get tickets. COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts-Related) Commissioner Armendariz stated that the Caesar Chavez breakfast was a great success. Ramon Martinez, a for mer professor at San Jose State, came down to give a follow up history on the Excentrico exhibit both in city hall and at the library. There will be a reception on April 19 th and Sally will give further information to Maria De Leon for the Commission. 4 Chair Mattie Scariot told the Commission about her feature film that she has produced and she invited the Commission to attend the premiere on June 4 th in Monterey. Chair Scariot will give Cathy all of the information and Cathy will pass it along to the Commission. ADJOURNMENT Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:52 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular me e ting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, May 1 0 , 2016 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020. _________________________________ Theresa Hernandez, Office Assistant II City of Gilroy Recreation Department
