Juvenile Detention Center Libraries Featured
The County of Santa Clara has produced a short video and news article focused on the innovative partnership that SCCLD has entered into with the County Office of Education
and County Probation Department to provide curated library services and programming to two juvenile detention centers, the Juvenile Justice Center in San José and the William H. James Ranch in Morgan Hill. The now year-and-a-half-old project pairs classic and recent titles that appeal to teens and young adults
with an on-site library staff who manages the collection, organizes activities, and makes book recommendations. Teen librarian Chris Pennington, who is featured in the video, has worked with other SCCLD personnel to arrange book talks, reading challenges, art programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities. This is the first library experience for many of these young people and provides a welcome and important step towards reducing recidivism. Each Story Matters, Every Child Counts
We end April by marking El día de los niños/El día de
los libros, better known as Día. This is a celebration of
children and connecting them to books, stories, and
libraries with an emphasis on diverse titles, featuring
different languages and cultures.
Our libraries have several events planned throughout
April that tie into Día. These include:
• Monday, April 8, 4-5 pm, Piñata Craft kids and family event (Gilroy Library)
• Friday, April 19, 3:30-4:30 pm, Decorate Your Own Piñata for Grades K-5 (Milpitas Library)
• Saturday, April 20, 10:30 am-1 pm, Lucha Libre Performance (Gilroy Library)

• Tuesday, April 30, 3:30-4:30 pm, Día de los Niños Craft Event (Los Altos Library)

Get a Jump on Summer Reading 2024
The days are longer and warming up and that can
only mean one thing- Summer Reading is coming!
Our program kicks off June 1 and runs through July
31, with a theme this year of Adventure Begins at
Your Library. Venture into a world of literature and
fun at your local library. Look for details about
events in next month’s report and events calendar.

badges for logging their progress, and then pick up a reward at their local library during the month of
August, while supplies last. Keep an eye on our website for information on Summer Reading, which will
include booklists and event highlights. We look forward to adventuring together.
Enjoy Free Entry to Local Parks
This is the 100th anniversary of the purchase
of the first parklands by Santa Clara County in
what has grown to include 52,000 acres and 28
parks. SCCLD is partnering with Santa Clara
County Parks and California State Parks to
offer free vehicle entry passes to parks here
and across the state, good for three weeks.
County passes are available at the Accounts
Desk of each library or from the Bookmobile on a first come, first served basis. State park passes need
to be checked out from our library catalogue and are good at 200 State Parks. Both types of passes
require a physical library card to obtain them. Find full details on our website.
Jewish American Heritage Month
From the creators of Superman, to baseball great Sandy
Koufax, Barbra Streisand and Judy Blume, America would
not be the same without the influence of Jewish Americans.
A staff blog recounts some of the history of immigration to
the U.S. by Jewish people from across the globe and lists
several recent books.
A vibrant local Jewish community, estimated to be around 350,000 in the Bay Area, recently marked the
holiday of Passover. Learn more about Jewish traditions in our Arts & Culture online resource page.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Modern life can be stressful and isolating. The
good news is that there are more resources than
ever available to address the many types of
mental health issues that people face, from help
relaxing to access to emergency assistance.
If you or someone you know requires emergency
mental health assistance, free help can be found
any time by calling 988. This nationwide line routes callers to trained local mental health professionals.
The County’s Department of Behavioral Health is the lead local public agency in providing suicide
prevention and other crisis intervention services. They can make referrals to providers around mental
health and drug addiction issues. They offer assistance 24/7, including holidays, with translation offered.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, the perfect time to consider small or big changes to our
lifestyle and activities to try to improve our mood and reduce stress. The Library has many resources
that can help with your voyage toward self-improvement, including a Community Resources page.
Headspace is a great way to practice meditation and mindfulness, which can help you reduce stress
and improve your sleep. We also offer multiple events at our libraries around these goals. Find health
libraries by StayWell and PlaneTree in our 24/7 Online Library’s Health & Wellness section, as well as
MedlinePlus, which features health information from the National Institutes of Health.
You can also find many books, eBooks and Audiobooks around mental health topics in our catalog.
Make sure to also check out the blogs for Teens and Adults on our website for book recommendations.

Two SCCLD Staff Members
Receive Major Recognitions
A duo of Santa Clara County Library District
employees have been recognized with the
Movers & Shakers Award by the Library
Journal (LJ) for their outstanding work.
The honor appears in the May issue of LJ.
Library Services Manager Clare Varesio was instrumental partnering with the County Behavioral Health
Services Department to bring classes to our libraries around Mental Health Access. Varesio also helped
organize educational workshops held in 2023 at all our libraries around naloxone, the anti-opioid
overdose drug commonly known as Narcan that can save lives if given to someone who is overdosing.
Residents can obtain free Narcan from the County’s Opioid Overdose Prevention Project.
Elizabeth Muñoz-Rosas, Children’s Supervising Librarian at Gilroy Library, has worked tirelessly to bring
materials, services and events to her community that reflect the interests of all residents. From bilingual
English/Spanish storytimes to making sure that Gilroy Library was selected as a host for the
Smithsonian’s Institution Traveling Exhibition Service’s Dolores Huerta exhibit, Muñoz-Rosas has truly
helped to bring the library to the people. In addition to the Dolores Huerta exhibit, Elizabeth held a
speaker panel addressing the work and life accomplishments of Dolores Huerta’s fight for the rights of
migrant farmworkers. This event featured a prominent filmmaker, educator and author, news reporter, as
well as Dolores Huerta herself. The panel was attended by multiple generations of migrant farmworkers,
