ADJOURNMENT City of Gilroy Youth Commission STAFF REPORT Agenda Item Title:Discussion of status of OpportuniTEEN Fair 2024 Meeting Date:February 26, 2024 From:Adam Henig, Recreation Manager RECOMMENDATION Review and comment on the status of the upcoming OpportuniTEEN Fair event. BACKGROUND The OpportuniTEEN Fair is scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Gilroy Civic Center Plaza from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. At the commission’s most recent meeting, they assessed their overall readiness for the March 23 event. They had originally set a goal of securing 25 vendors. At the time of February 12 meeting, they had secured 16. Because they had fallen short of their goal, staff recommended two options: a.Change the date of the event to April b.Host a special meeting to ensure there’s enough time to ensure they have everything needed—vendors, donations, food truck, etc.—to have a successful event. The Commission elected to have a special meeting, however, they were tasked with recruiting more organizations to serve as vendors for the event. The following agencies and businesses were added to the list of prospective vendors along with the assigned commissioner responsible for following up: •Oakwood School Summer Camp (Garcia) •Boys and Girls Club Summer Camp (Beyret) •Gilroy Movie Theater (Sarath) •National Honor Society (Mustafa) •Camp Campbell (Nguyen) •Walden West (Nguyen) •Downtown Live/Gilroy Downtown Business Association (James) •Harvard University Board (Nguyen) •Fifth Street Coffee (Reynolds) Discussion of status of OpportuniTEEN Fair 2024 City of Gilroy Youth Commission Page 2 of 2 February 26, 2024 •Poki Bowl (Nguyen) •Interact Club (Lai) •Sea Cadet (James) •Gilroy Bowling (Mustafa) •Saved By Nature (Beyret) •SCC Parks (Mustafa, Reynolds) As of the publishing of the meeting packet, the number of confirmed vendors is now 22. ANALYSIS Moving forward, the Commission will need to do the following to prepare for the March 23 event: •Secure more vendors in case some do not show up on the day of the event. •Discuss the outreach strategy to ensure every teenager in Gilroy is aware of the event •Determine how the “passport system” will work. •Obtaining donations and giveaways.
