PUBLIC COMMENT GUIDELINES:
During the PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA portion of the
meeting, each person wishing to speak should prepare a presentation of not more than
three (3) minutes. Persons wishing to address the Commission are requested, but not
required, to complete a Speaker’s Card located at the entrances. Completion of this
speaker’s card is voluntary. All persons may attend this meeting and speak, regardless
if a card is completed or not. Speaker’s slips should be submitted to the Secretary
BEFORE this portion of the meeting begins. Anyone wishing to address the Commission
on any other item on this AGENDA is requested, but not required, to fill out a speaker’s
slip as well and submit it to the Secretary BEFORE the Commission takes action on the
item.

Motion was made by Commissioner Maricela Andrade to approve the May
14, 2019 regular meeting minutes. Motion seconded by Commissioner

Motion was made by Commissioner Maricela Andrade to approve the June

VI. INTRODUCTIONS
A. Nelly Bermudez
Commissioner Nelly Bermudez introduced herself to the Commission.
Nelly has been a resident of Gilroy for 6 years and grew up visiting Gilroy
from her hometown of San Jose. She is an artist that works with oil painting.
Recreation Director Maria De Leon introduced herself to the group as well.
She has worked with the City of Gilroy a little over 12 years.

IX. NEW BUSINESS
A. Arts and Culture Commission Presentation to City Council
Maria De Leon informed the Commission they will be presenting on
Monday, August 19, 2019 to City Council.
Maria went over the commissions power point slides and requested the
commissioners remain present after the meeting is adjourned to take a
group picture.
She informed the Commissioners to be present for the City Council
presentation at 6 PM.
Motion was made by Commissioner Maricela Andrade to approve the City
Council presentation. Motion seconded by Commissioner Sally Armendariz.
Motion passed 5-0-0.
X. OLD BUSINESS
A. Update of 2019 Arts and Culture Commission Work Plan
Maria De Leon asked the commission to review the Commission Work Plan.
Motion was made by Commissioner Maricela Andrade to approve the Arts
and Culture Commission Work Plan. Motion seconded by Commissioner
Marika Somorjai,
Motion passed 5-0-0.
B. Fiscal Year 2020 Training Budget Expenditures

Maria De Leon went over the fiscal year training budget expenditures.
She reminded the commission they are allowed $1000.00 for training
purposes.
Motion was made by Commissioner Sally Armendariz to keep the budget.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Nelly Bermudez.
Motion passed 5-0-0.
XI. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner/liaison Nancy Fierro was not present at meeting to report on
update.
XII. GENERAL PLANNING ADVISORY COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner/liaison Nancy Fierro was not present at meeting to report on
update.
XIII. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE
A. GIlroy Arts Alliance Report
Maria De Leon went over the Gilroy Arts Alliance schedule of upcoming
exhibits and events.
XIV. STAFF REPORTS
A. Recreation Staff Report
Maria De Leon went over the recent Recreation Departments recent
programs.
The theater production of Wizard of Oz directed by Colleen Blanchard took
place in July, with the final show being a sellout. The fall pro duction
scheduled is Peter Pan which will be directed by Hillary Little, auditions will
take place August 31 at the Senior Center.
The Fall 2019 Activity Guide was mailed and includes many programs for all
ages and interests.
The annual Party in the Park took place at San Ysidro Park on June 21 and
had an attendance of more than 800 residents. The event encourages safe
use of the park through various activities.
XV. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS
Christopher High School representative Sara Neese introd uced herself and
informed the commission of the schools current programs.
Drama: The Drama department held its annual children's theater camp over
the summer which raised $2,000, and the funds are used for drama sets,
costumes, etc.
They are requesting community help with fundraising in the near future by
sending out requests through Peach Jar.

XVI. COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts-Related)
Commissioner Sally Armendariz informed the commission CARAS has
already completed the first phase in restoration of the Aztec Mural.
CARAS is taking donations through GoFundMe on their Facebook page as
well as their office.
CARAS has cancelled their tamale festival at Christmas Hill Park on
10/13/19. They will be holding the festival Downtown on 10/13/19.
XVII. STAFF COMMENTS
Maria went over some updates from the updated staff report which included
date and time of Breakfast with Santa on December 14, 2019.
Maria encouraged the Commissioners to volunteer for the Breakfast with
Santa event.

Recommendation:
Receive and comment on status of 2019 Arts and Culture Commission Work Plan.
Executive Summary
During the March 12, 2019 annual retreat, the Arts and Culture Commission discussed
and drafted a work plan to be completed within the calendar year. The Commission is
tasked with maintaining the work plan through the 2019 fiscal year. The work plan
should be aligned with City Council’s current goals:
1. Ensure Financial Stability
2. Enhance Public Safety Capabilities
3. Revitalize Downtown
4. Focus on Revenue Driven Economic Development
5. Retain Stability in the City’s Workforce
6. Provide Opportunities for Meaningful Public Engagement
7. Ensure Neighborhoods Benefit Equally from City Services

Agenda Item Title: Recreation Staff Report

Receive and comment.
The fall production will be Peter Pan, Jr. (not Annie) and it will be directed by Hillary
Little. Auditions were August 31 at the Gilroy Senior Center. The performance will run
from November 8-17 at Gilroy High School Theater.
The 2019 Fall Activity Guide is now available. It features programs for all ages and all
interests including the annual Breakfast with Santa, which will be held on Saturday,
December 14. There are lots of cultural art classes are included in the current guide
such as Polynesian dancing, Aztek dancing, Zumba, and keyboarding.
On Friday, October 25, Spirits Night will be hosted at San Ysidro Park. It’s a free
community event that features a children’s costume contest, games, arts and crafts,
“Trunk or Treat,” face painting and more. It begins at 5:00pm and ends at 9:00pm. The
event is sponsored by the South County Youth Task Force.
On October 1, National Night Out will be occurring in Downtown Gilroy. It was
rescheduled from its earlier date because of the Garlic Festival incident. The free event
is organized and hosted by the Gilroy Police Department and Gilroy Police Foundation.
The October Arts and Culture Commission meeting will be held at the Gilroy Arts
Alliance (GAA), which is located on 7341 Monterey Road.
