Announcing Silicon Valley Reads
2020
We are excited to announce that in
recognition of the 100th anniversary of
women’s suffrage in the U.S., the theme for
Silicon Valley Reads 2020 will be “Women
Making It Happen.”
Five books – two for adults and teens and three for children – have been selected to give readers of
all ages the opportunity to learn about how women are breaking barriers to achieve excellence in
fields previously dominated by men:
Alpha Girls: The Women Upstarts Who Took on Silicon Valley’s Male Culture and
Made the Deals of a Lifetime by Julian Guthrie. It tracks the careers and personal lives
of four entrepreneurial women in the Silicon Valley venture capital community who were
instrumental in the rise of such companies as Facebook, Imperva, Tesla, Trulia,
Salesforce and more. The best-selling book is being adapted for a television series.
The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung, a critically-acclaimed novel that focuses on a
fictional trailblazer -- an exceptional female mathematician who embarks on a quest to
conquer the Riemann hypothesis and discovers along the way her own mysterious family
history and secrets long buried during World War II.
The Most Magnificent Thing, a charming picture book by Ashley Spires about a
little girl who wants to build something magnificent. The book has been made into a
short animated film featuring the narration of Whoopi Goldberg.
Who Says Women Can’t Be Computer Programmers?: The Story of Ada Lovelace
by Tanya Lee Stone. Ada Lovelace, the daughter of poet Lord Byron, lived in the 19th
century and had imaginative ideas about science and mathematics. Long before the
computer was invented, she envisioned its possibility and is credited as the first
computer programmer.

Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream by Tanya Lee Stone. Women
were not allowed to be astronauts when America created NASA in 1958, but 13 women
challenged the government and opened the potential for females to take their place in
the sky, piloting jets and commanding space capsules.
Silicon Valley Reads 2020 will kick off with a special event on Thursday evening, Jan. 23, at De Anza
College Visual & Performing Arts Center in Cupertino. More than 100 free programs for all ages will
follow in February and March including author visits, an art exhibit, films, panel discussions,
speakers, workshops and activities for children and teens. The complete calendar of events will be
posted to the SiliconValleyReads.org website at the end of December.
Silicon Valley Reads is an annual community engagement program presented by Santa Clara County
Library District, San José Public Library and Santa Clara County Office of Education. Follow Silicon
Valley Reads on Facebook and Twitter and watch for more details on the website

Welcome Jennifer Weeks- New Deputy County Librarian of Strategic
Initiatives and Staff Development
The Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is proud to
announce that, after an intensive nationwide search, Jennifer
Weeks has been appointed to the position of Deputy County
Librarian. Weeks is currently the Children’s Services Manager with
SCCLD, where she focuses on library collections, services and
programming for children 0-12 and their families.
Weeks’ notable accomplishments at SCCLD include conceiving
and implementing the student eAccount program, which created
90,000 eAccounts for students at 13 local school districts providing
access to the complete online library. She has also instituted the Lunch at the Library summer
program, which has served more than 16,000 meals to children in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Martin
who do not have access to subsidized meals outside of the school year. Weeks represents the
Library in the County Office of Education’s Strong Start project, a coalition of early childhood leaders
and organizations, where she helped to develop their master plan.
Understanding the great community need for library services in parts of the County that are far away
from a public library, Weeks helped to expand the Bookmobile service to upward of 50 stops per
month and implemented a diverse collection of children’s books available at 13 visitation centers for
foster children, two health clinics and one First 5 Family Resource Center in Santa Clara County.
Weeks officially starts her position on Monday, October 7, 2019, joining the Santa Clara County
Library District executive team.

New Passport Acceptance Facility Opens at
Los Altos Library
Los Altos Library will begin offering U.S. passport services starting on
October 1. This marks the third SCCLD library to become an official
passport facility along with Cupertino and Milpitas Libraries.
The Passport Acceptance Facility will help people obtain first-time passports for adults and
children, renewals for passports issued before the applicant was 16 years of age, renewals for
expired passports issued more than 15 years ago, replacements for lost, stolen, or damaged
passports, and provide passport photo services. The service is available by appointment only.
Visit www.sccl.org/passport to select a time and location, find out what important documents you
will need to bring, and applicable fees. Los Altos Library began accepting online reservations on
Monday, September 16, 2019 with the first appointment on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.
Once submitted, passport applications typically take between four to six weeks to be processed,
with the option of paying a $60 expedite fee to cut that time down by two weeks. Passports will be
mailed directly to the applicant by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs.
“This is yet another good reason for people to visit the Los Altos Library,” said Santa Clara County
Board of Supervisors President and Library Joint Powers Authority Board member Joe Simitian.
“Our libraries are so much more than just the great books. While folks are there for passport
services, they can also find travel guides, use Rosetta Stone to learn another language, and
discover other materials to help plan their business trips and vacations.”
An SCCLD library account is not required for the passport service, although one is recommended
to utilize all of the travel-related information available at each library and through the online
library.
Los Altos Library Passport Hours beginning Oct. 1:
Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (closed 1-2 p.m.)
Monday and Wednesday 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. (closed 4-5 p.m.)

MAKER SPACE GRANT
Developing Maker Spaces in Under-Resourced Libraries Throughout California is a grant from the Center
for Childhood Creativity at the Bay Area Discovery Museum (Sausalito) and the California State Library.
Librarians Kelly McKean and Lisa Duff have gathered information to design a Maker Space in the Library.
Phase I provided staff training and a community needs assessment. Phase II involved planning the space
and its contents. As an adjunct, Kelly and Lisa developed the highly successful July Mini-Maker Faire.
We are now awaiting Phase III, the completion of the maker space on the second floor of the library.
RISE UP: A PROGRAM FOR AT-RISK YOUTH
The Rise Up grant program sought to curb violence and high-risk behaviors by providing educational
opportunities for at-risk Gilroy youth and their families. Rise Up was developed in response to efforts by
the South County Youth Task Force (SCYTF) to counteract local gang violence. The $48,000 grant was
funded through California State Library LSTA (Library Services and Technology) dollars.
Through the Rise Up grant, we have deepened our relationships with the South County Youth Task
Force and its members and our involvement with youth. During the past winter, the Library hosted the
Resilient Families program and are currently hosting another set of sessions this fall. The program
offered parents and caregivers of children up to age 3 the tools they needed to nurture their young
children and support their early development. In conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office, the Library
hosted the 12-week Parent Project, the largest mandated juvenile diversion program in the country.
More recently, local youth went on special field trips to museums and to the beach.
On September 27th, the Rise Up grant screened Disney’s McFarland USA, a film based on a true story of
underdogs triumphing over obstacles. The film was shown in Spanish on special outdoor projection
equipment purchased through the grant to an audience of nearly 100 people. The equipment will be used
for years to come.
Thanks to all our partners and members of the South County Youth Task Force including Gilroy
Recreation Department, Gilroy Police Department, Community Solutions, the County District Attorney’s
Office, Rebekah’s Children’s Center, the Culinary Academy, the Gilroy Unified School District, Youth
Alliance and other staff and agencies. Special kudos to Gilroy Library’s Kelly Young and Deputy County
Librarian Chris Brown who successfully co-managed the grant.
