Although I am not available to attend your meeting on Feb 24th, I wanted to express my support for District Elections for the City of Gilroy. I have long believed that there are portions of the community that are underserved and although I also believe that the council makes every effort to provide for those communities, there is no substitute for a representative that lives in the community being served. Just as you are more familiar with the needs of your neighbors, you cannot be as familiar with the needs of neighborhoods across the entire city. Gilroy is a growing city and is one of the few remaining cities in the bay area to not have district elections. We need to recognize that as our city has grown, different neighborhoods have different needs that only a neighborhood representative can champion. I have lived in Gilroy for close to 50 years. We moved here because it was a small town where anyplace you went you would see someone you know. At that time, it was much easier for council members to be familiar with the needs of the entire community, because everybody knew everybody. Gilroy has grown a lot since then and I no longer believe that is possible. I hope you can see the many benefits of District Elections. Please vote yes establish District Elections. Thank you for your consideration. Tom Fischer
