Dear members of the Gilroy City Council:
The Asian Law Alliance strongly endorses District Map D as the best option. We believe
that Gilroy residents will benefit from this map.
The purpose of district elections is not merely to redraw lines but to address long-
standing disparities in political representation. Map D does this. It increases the
likelihood that a community that has repeatedly been left without a voice at the
decision-making table will have representatives of their choice elected to the council.
By adopting Map D, this council would not only demonstrate its commitment to fair
representation, but it would also significantly reduce the city’s legal exposure and the
financial burden of litigation.
The council took the appropriate step in this matter, by NOT deciding to follow in
footsteps of the City of Santa Clara and litigate the issue of at large versus district
elections. The next most appropriate action is to adopt District Map D.
Sincerely,
----
